Pye 65A Chassis

OK, let's make a start.
It's 18" Wide, 9" Deep and 12 3/4" High plus the wooden Strips on the Bottom. The two wooden strips are between 5/16" and 3/8" thick depending on where I measure. Oddly, in my experience with Pyes, the Top is flat and horizontal. Pye seemed to like them sloping, presumably to discourage people from putting the proverbial Plant Pot on the top. The Plate on the Bottom is a piece of thick Card. You can probably extrapolate the size of the Hole and the Plastic Surround from the Pictures but if not let me know. Internally the HT Battery lives on the Shelf and the Accumulator on the RHS. I'd better Scan the Dial. Alan

Hi Alan,
thanks for the information. There is no way I could make an exact replica of the original cabinet, the moulding which surrounds the loudspeaker aperture and tuning scale precludes and chance of doing that. But nevertheless I'll attempt to make something that looks good. Geordie McBoyne.

Herewith, the Dial. It's quite simple. It's 4 3/4" x 8 1/8".
I can do a higher resolution Scan if required. Yes, clearly the Plastic Surround is a bit of a bugger, but I think a simple Routed Aperture, at an angle and painted Black, would suffice. Now I must find some thin Rubber to re-mount the Dial. The original disintegrated when I removed it. Alan

The Pye model 45A mains radio has the same style of cabinet as the 65A and in fact I think the chassis metalwork is also the same as the battery model. The valve line up is: CCH35, EF39 and CBL31, it's a short superhet. The HT supply rectifier is a Mullard CY31 which appears to be mounted along with heater volts dropper resistor on a above chassis assembly.
Examination of the circuits and component layout of the two receivers seems to suggest that the tuning coils and waveband switching is also similar. Geordie McBoyne.

NEWS FLASH!
Found a Pye model 15A upstairs above the shop. Like the models 45A and 65A the cabinet has same appearance. Now it's an easy task to copy it for Trevor's model 65A battery set. About the Pye model 15A: same chassis metalwork as the 45A and 65A. AC mains only. Short superhet employing ECH35, EF39 and EBL31. AZ31 HT supply rectifier. Geordie McBoyne.

So it is

Hi Alan,
According to the Radio Servicing book volume II the Pye model 15A was released in 1945. No month given but it is likely to have been be later on in the year and in time for the Radio Show at Earls Court. Assuming there was a Radio Show in 1945. Model 45A released in 1946. The Bakelite cabinet version model 47A was 1947. The battery sets: 65A 1946, 67A 1947, P22B 1949. Geordie McBoyne. |
