Too true Trevor but the whole purpose of buying it was to give me a Microsoft system now XP is gone. Its only for travelling abroad with.

My old computers at home run Linux and the only draw back is getting them to talk to printers and anything new, I can't be bothered wading through loads of nerd speak.

Surprised your having trouble talking to new hardware. I use Mint Rosa 17.3 cinnamon 64bit on an Asus X553M and have no problems with new hardware. The latest versions like this find anything I throw at it.
You can of course run XP inside Linux with Virtualbox which is far better than Wine.
On my older PC in the shed I use Mint 17.3 Mate 32 bit and its brilliant for music and video plus al the other goodies from Linux.

Oh, Jeffrey,  I tried my wife',s ipad, had my nails clipped, but these bricklayers hands  of mine don't fit! My phone is an ancient Nokia 1200 with buttons! I just about cope with that. Using the ipad touch screen for typing and having to constantly change from letters to numbers drives me mad.
I've bought some stylii off the bay but won't have them till we get home ( Got 1 from China for 22p including post- how can they do that? )
so this nice large keyboard is better for me. Sitting on a remote beach you don't have much access to the modern accoutrements. Wifi runs here at between 0.8KB/sec and 76KB/sec, so it takes time. Been downloading 211MB of software since 9am, its now 5PM and it may finish today!

I know I am a Luddite  but I'm  happy here among friends, its 34 degrees now, sweaty fingers on a miniature screen is not an option.

Besides, its not me that's defective, its the technology. Ergonomically these phones and tablets don't suit.

That's why I suggested a blutooth keyboard. It's no worse than a laptop keyboard. I've tried one with a friend's ipad and it was ok.

Big hands are an issue - I have HUGE hands, so have to have a reasonably large smart phone so the on-screen buttons are usable.

My FiL, who was a farmer, had such gnarly hands with "sausage" fingers (one of which he accidentally cut off with a chainsaw), that we had to get him a special telephone & mobile, each with EXTRA LARGE buttons !

Search Google for "phone with extra large buttons" and you'll see what I mean. Very useful for the digitally-challenged

The mobile we got him was one of the GPS tracking ones with speed-dial buttons so if he had an accident on the farm, we could find him - you can ask the phone where it is by sending it an SMS - they can also send out regular updates so if he goes into a "No signal" zone at least you'll know the entry point and time - trying to find an 88-year-old farmer somewhere in 150 acres of hilly woodlands, fields & meadows would be a nightmare...

Brilliant post and one that raised a smile.
A lot of the farmers round here still use a CB Radio and funnily enough when I was repairing pressure washers I got a nice little sideline fixing the old "chicken boxes" for them, most of the farmers wouldn't entertain a mobile phone due to big hand and fingers!

Typing is much easier on a full size keyboard and the fiber pipe is fast.
I can get a Linux live CD in about two minutes.
Those hand held gadgets are just a means to keep in touch while away from home and a sub for a sat-nav.
Don't forget to buy a local pay as you go SIM if you go overseas. You will get fleeced if you don't.

It depends whether your overseas trip is inside the EU or not.

Unfortunately, the EU Parliament deferred the abolition of roaming charges from the end of 2015 - as planned by the EU Commission* - until next year but the charges are coming down again in April, but note the figures below are surcharges on top of your normal rate.



* Interesting, isn't it, when we've been told for years that the EU Parliament has no powers to overrule the Commission. How much more of what we're told by the 'out' brigade is just a pack of lies? Anyone remember the tales about straight bananas and grey processed peas?

Of course. if we do leave the EU, the phone companies will be able to charge us anything they like, and we won't be able to do anything about it ...

I've been in Israel for the last week. My phone is with Three. All Three users get free roaming to a lot of countries including most of Europe, US, and Israel. Calls to Israel numbers cost me 13p/min but didn't need to use this as Viber (a VOIP service, a bit like Skype) kept me in touch with my Israeli friends. Mobile coverage in Israel is excellent and free wifi very widespread.

It would have been useful to have a tablet as typing gets tedious on a phone.
