Some mobile devices turn all the thumbnails sideways. This usually happens when uploading the photos. The workaround is to rotate them before upload and then rotate them again.
It does not effect all forum software either.

I think there's a Terminology problem. All the Thumbnails are OK, it's the actual Pictures as viewed that are rotated.
The originals are OK.

In the Exif data contained within a JPEG file is a setting for orientation. Not all software pays attention to this, and just displays the image the "default" way, based on the order of the data in the file. The most likely explanation is that the forum software is correctly taking into account the orientation setting while creating thumbnails, but that the particular browser is ignoring this setting when it downloads the original image.

Please, when experiencing these sorts of issues, tell us what web browser and operating system you are using.

We had the problem with a site in the United States and rotating the image and saving it and then rotating and saving it again cured it most of the time.

Just tried it with Chrome and that turns them round as well.
By the way, the Forum didn't mind me using two Browsers simultaneously - didn't even ask me to log in again.

64-bit Windows 7 and Opera 28. IE works correctly. The images on page 3 and 4 are still correct in Opera.

In post 48, the first image is upside down, 2 is correct, 3 is rotated 90 degrees clockwise, and 4 is correct. I'm pretty sure that #2 was upside down yesterday.

Thanks! I've tried it on another machine, and I am now seeing the problems you are reporting.

The machine I tried earlier is a Ubuntu machine (version 10.04 or 10.10) running Firefox. But that version of FF is quite old - version 20 or similar.

Having got home, I've tried a newer Ubuntu build (14.04) with the latest FF build, and it's behaving as yours. And an XP box, also with the latest version of FF is the same.

Hmm - need to think about this. But it'll be that Exif data.

I vaguely remember having this problem on another forum many years ago - IIRC, it was an image that was the wrong orientation from the camera (occasionally the orientation sense in the camera stuck), so was rotated to fix. But under the version of Linux I was running, the image rotate facility just changed the Exif data so that applications would display the image correctly, but that was no good for that forum. Conversely, it appears that if you rotate the image in XP, the JPEG is recreated with the data in the "right order" - takes a tad longer to do, but will always display correctly. I believe that Vista (and newer) changes the Exif data when you rotate.

As for logging in in different browsers, that is not a problem, and not surprising. When you log in, a cookie is created by the browser and stored in its "ecosystem". At some point in the past, you will have logged in with both. Having done that, the cookie will indicate to the server that you have a validated session with the forum software. You can make a request from either browser, and the software will simply server up the page requested - it doesn't discriminate between different sessions. Between all my computers at home and at work, I must have half a dozen on the go!

Right - as suspected, according to http://exifdata.com, the orientation has been set to "rotate through 180 degrees" - see attached screenshot.

The XP image viewer spots this and shows it the right way around. Paint Shop Pro V6 (pre-historic version!) also gets it right. But Firefox does not! Well, new versions don't - obviously the older version that I was using this afternoon does look at the Exif data...

This does show that the forum software is doing the right thing when creating thumbnails, as I speculated earlier. But our web browsers are not. I wonder why? I'll try to do some research tomorrow, but for now I must sleep!

It's interesting that the Thumbnail is the original Picture which is still in my 'phone.
I downloaded, cropped and saved it before uploading.
