Just to resurrect this thread, I came across the original article by Karl-Heinz Kubbeler (which is itself a derivative of an earlier project) - its in German, but Google Translate does the hard work for you

I've enclosed the latest manual in English which is for V1.10k of the software - I can get all the other versions, but they are contained in a German code repository (SVN - SubVersioN) which is a bit of a challenge to get through
Specifically, read section 2.5 "Chinese clones" - he points out that the Chinese ones on eBay (the ones we have all bought) have some design & implementation issues - he details how to fix them and to upgrade your boards.
To keep the cost down they use a zener for D1 where a precision voltage reference (costing about £2.80 + VAT) should be used - the part is LT1004CZ-2.5#PBF and is available from Farnell - http://uk.farnell.com/linear-technology/...tt=2115942.
Also, some 100nF ceramic decoupling capacitors are missing and need to be added. Further, board layout issues introduce other errors that are only compensated for with f/w version 1.07k or later.
