Receiving BBC World Service & BFBS in Cyprus & Malta

Does anyone know if local radio stations on either island relay BBC WS &/or BFBS programmes, or would a Shortwave radio be needed.? AFAIK the person who is travelling to these places isn't interested in listening via Iphone or any similar device, but on a conventional radio receiver.

Tesco sell a cheap light weight short wave radio that has a headphone socket that could be fed to a decent amplifier.
The internal speaker is only good for indication while testing signal strength as it is tiny.
It it model RAD108.

Thanks for the info, Refugee. I'd forgotten about that Tesco Radio, but it's no doubt similar to the 'XTREME AUDIO WB007' I've seen on eBay (and a great many others as well!) Personally I have a Brandt RS902, now maybe 13 or 14 years old, which works very well on all bands, the only drawback being a fiddly little switch to select the desired SW band.
This set gave a good account of itself in a rural part of South Africa a couple of years ago. If it were still available I'd recomment it to the person who enquired about World service reception.

I never had great success receiving the BBC WS when on holiday in the Med', I was in the Balearics which are not too far from Malta and I had a good radio, a Sony SW7600 and a copy of the World Radio and TV Handbook frequencies, reception in the Canaries was much better.

Doesn't sound too good, John. I was asked about a suitable radio on which to hear BBC WS & BFBS in Malta & Cyprus by an elderly couple who are going to those islands on holiday in November. I don't think they'll want one of the rather complex digitally tuned radios, rather something simple to use, preferably with manual tuning. No doubt, though, there will be interference from various digital devices in the two islands, just as ther often is here nowadays, whatever radio is used.

It's a while since I last tried but, like John, I've had very little success with receiving the BBC World Service on Shortwave in Cyprus. The good news is that there does seem to be some chance of receiving BFBS radio on VHF, though the coverage may well be tailored to match the Sovereign Base Areas (SBAs). According to the BFBS web site (http://web202.ssvc.com/radio/how-to-listen) the Cyprus frequencies are:

Ayios Nikolaos - BFBS Radio 2 - 89.7, BFBS Cyprus - 107.3

ESBA - BFBS Radio 2 - 95.3, BFBS Cyprus - 99.6

Nicosia - BFBS Radio 2 - 89.7, BFBS Cyprus - 91.7

Troodos - BFBS Cyprus - 92.1

WSBA - BFBS Radio 2 - 92.1, BFBS Cyprus - 91.7

It took a bit digging around to find this:
Cyprus transmitter; freq. 1323 kHz.
Tx. times, GMT: 03:00 → 06:45; 13:00 → 18.45

A few years ago when I was employed by a firm supplying Tx. gear to the BBC W/S, BFBS and others, I recall discovering that the BBC W/S is gradually closing down its S/W service and replacing it with VHF / FM and the 'Net. VHF / FM for cities with a substantial population (100k+); everywhere else, the 'Net.
