I picked this up cheap because 'It didn't work'.
In my experience provided the Transformer is OK, and they generally are, there's not much else that can't be fixed. Even the Meter is pretty bog-standard.
Diagnosis of the problem really strained the Intellect - the Mains Switch was duff. Shorting it out restored it to working order. Much poking about and Switch Cleaner failed to restore it to life.
So, what's the chances of a replacement?
Errr, well, if there's any out there I didn't find one. I guess miniature Mains-rated Push-button switches were available to Big Companies 25 years ago but not easily to Amateurs now. Anyway, it looked as though a Miniature Toggle Switch would fit so to hell with authenticity.
In order to get at everything it's necessary to take it to bits. The PCB plugs into a Socket at the rear and there's a floating Plug with a Socket under the PCB. The 'Front' of the PCB is supported on the Front Panel which is a separate Assembly held to the Main Case with a couple of Screws underneath.
So, unplug the Cable from underneath - it's bound to be Polarised - and remove the Screws, followed by unplugging the PCB.
Changing the Switch was pretty straightforward - a bit of Amunium to block up the hole and give it some support, and a bit of fiddley wiring. By the way, I've hated those Miniature Switches for many a long year. The least bit too much heat and the Tags loosen. Oddly, it doesn't seem to stop them working unless you're particularly brutal and incompetent.
Now to put it back together, the only problem being the un-polarised Plug. Fear not, I've got another L30/1, so whip the Cover off and compare. Errr, no, the other one has an entirely different PCB Assembly. I suspect it's an older version.
So, the next step was an hour tracing the (Cabled) Wiring and comparing it to the Diagram, followed by plug in, take Deap Breath and switch on - and Robert is your Father's Brother as they say
They're useful little PSUs which don't accupy much Bench space. Fifteen Volts at 1 Amp and 30 Volts at 500 mA is good enough for small jobs. Being Farnell they have a tendency to keep working, although the L30/1s are the 'Cheapo' end of the Range. I've got bigger ones if more poke is required.
