The mains dropper example I quoted was to highlight the some times long term intermittent nature of component failure, it can happen with signal diodes as well as most other components.

Agreed, but they is an enormous difference as to the susbsequent consequences between it happening to a mains dropper and a small signal diode.

As I said earlier, I can claim no originality for this particular fault solution on the TR82 - I'm just passing it on with my personal experience of using it added. Many others have offered it as a fix before me, so if apparently we are all "just wishing and hoping" then so be it.

There is no compromise I can see by adding a diode underneath in the first instance.

I did say "in the first instance", if what you say actually happens then you open up the IFT can and remove the original diode. The point is, from the past experiences of others, not just myself who have done this - it is often a long term solution.

Anyhow, I think we must agree to disagree on this issue.

Its also the way I tend to approach the hobby - practical fixes to faults rather than being too concerned about what theory would suggest or predict in such situations. I find theory is only useful up to a point.

I've always been more interested in getting something to work satisfactorily rather than following theory word for word. A lot of the time it just isn't necessary. The only time I pay strict attention to it is when it really matters - safety issues, high voltages, etc.

Restoring vintage radios is a pleasurable hobby for me, if I arrive at a workable solution by thinking laterally or outside-of-the-box then that's just my personal approach. For me it's the end result that matters, not if I've followed conventional wisdom along the way.

hi all i am back again with an update,i soldered in the diode between pins 5 & 6 on no 3 from underneath just to test it out & it did not make a lot of difference, i will strip it down tommorow & take the old one out & see if that helps at all,as i think i mentioned before i was having a prod around with a pencil & when i touch the wave change switch terminal (the one that goes to the tuning capacitor)the volume shoots up considerably & i can get a few other stations although they are very faint,talk sport is the best reception station i can get.

Hi Laurie,

From what you've said the detector diode may not be the problem after all then, it seems to be the waveband switch contacts. As I pointed out earlier in the thread, they are no doubt oxidised and need a squirt of Servisol 10 to clean them up.

It sounds as though the wave change switch might need a good clean or a wire is loose.
By the way if the original detector diode has gone low reverse resistance then bridging it might not make much difference depending on how bad it is.
The switches can be deceptive, you think they may be clean but they are not, it only takes a thin layer of dirt or oxidization to increase the resistance of the contacts.
