I thought that might be the case.

I'm sure in some part of the manual there is a bit that says that the ACM terminal is the "common signal ground" and in another part of the manual as "common terminal of analog and control signals" although I can't seem to find the former reference when I last looked but that would be no suprise with my eyesight. The only reason I mention this is that using the terms ground and earth within the same manual could confuse some folks. Maybe I didn't read it and was just dreaming....

Many thanks Refugee for the pot wiring instructions on #214 which I've been trying to copy this afternoon. I used screened cable and the two new 10K WW pots working directly into the VFD under the hall floor. I hope I understood your instructions correctly and I've drawn a rough sketch as to how I wired up.

Unfortunately I couldn't get any difference; the screening didn't make any difference as well. Connecting this way aren't the two pots in series? I tried this a few days ago using two 5K pots with the same result? It's highly likely I'm at fault but I did ensure the track end to wiper at zero volts was connected to 10V as in the drawing.

I hoped the screening would have some effect but I didn't notice any difference at all; I didn't connect the motor supply screening to ground but I can try this next time Peter. I connected the pot cables screening to the Main Circuit Terminal "E".

I've just noticed instructions on pages 12 & 13 of the manual regarding screening and how important this is; when I removed these two pots and re-connected as previously the motor sounded a bit noisier?

I have access difficulty to the VFD making connecting a challenge. Rolling around uncomfortably under the hall and feeling chilled in the glare of the LED floodlight I called it a day.

Does your VFD give full pot sweep Peter?

It's possible I might be better off clearing the bench and setting the VFD and a spare 3 phase motor up on the bench because playing around the way I'm doing is getting me nowhere; I have the original 3/4hp Graduate motor to save removing the motor already installed which is a right pain to remove.

Once again I'm running around tomorrow but over the weekend nothing is planned so I can spend time on this problem.

Thanks once again everyone for your time and patience for which I'm grateful. Hopefully Huanyang will reply with the solution in the near future but with my luck I think this will be the moment I finally crack this problem?

Hi Col, yes my 10k pot gives stopped to full speed with full 270 deg rotation, but it is a ABB VFD. I take the point about not having an earth loop. I avoided this by using the screen of the VFD to motor cable to earth the lathe via the motor casing, with no other earth connected to the lathe. The screen braid is a very heavy tinned copper sheath over the cable, estimate about 4 sq mm. as the mains fuse is 5A, I think I,m about OK. Peter

Col, you don't want the two pots in series, connect the end of one pot (call that the preset pot) between the 10v and the common (ACM) then connect one end of the the control pot (the speed pot) to the slider of the preset pot and the other end to the 10v end of the preset pot, connect the slider of the control pot (speed pot) to the V input on the panel, before switching on make sure the slider of the preset pot is up at the 10v end and the slider of the speed pot is about midway, switch on and adjust the preset pot so that the voltage between ACM and that pots slider is about 8.3 volts then do any fine tuning to suit. I think I've got that right.....hopefully???

I've just back tracked to your information regarding 1V per 1,000 revs Refugee and I can easily check this with a simple parameter P005 adjustment. I know the top speed of the motor to be over 10,000 rpm so if you are correct I should be able to double the current speed to 6,000 revs and obtain a much larger pot sweep? If this does work then perhaps there is another parameter to adjust to bring the full sweep within the 0-3,000 rpm? Its strange though that Huanyang specify the 10K pot without adding additional information? I'll remove the drive belt for high speed testing.

Your ABB VFD works with a 10K pot Peter so my Huanyang should also work with the 10K pot and I think something blindingly obvious is being missed? My VFD to motor cable is 1.5mm and has a proper woven screen. On page 12 of my manual it states ground both ends of the screen so this is what I'll do; I can ground the lathe end by connection to either the pedestal or the motor the other end grounded at the mains ground terminal on the VFD and I need to separate the power cables and signal cables because they run very closely side by side at the moment?

I'm not fully conversant with all this work Lawrence and perhaps I've misunderstood Refugee's instructions but I know I tried the two 5K pots in series the other day without any success; it really did test my patience and tire me out this afternoon and after playing with the VFD I washed the car; I felt perished as the last of the sun disappeared; it's getting much colder and under the bungalow wasn't like being on the beach either.

I've always said if there are 100 ways to do a job wrong I'll do these 100 ways first so I wonder what number I'm now up to?

When I get into the garage tomorrow I'll try Refugee's theory out first regarding the 1V and 1,000 revs as this is very easy; if no change then I need to spend time screening the motor cable making a good job of it; I might need to buy some proper metal glands unless I can simply connect the screening to the motor via the motor earth connection.

I'll also check that the motor is only earthed to the VFD Peter and not to the lathe. I'm usually very careful to earth the actual lathe as well for my own safety? I've been up since very early this morning spending a lot of time on this problem; I was also awake during last night thinking about it so I think I need to call it a day and spend some quality time with Bron watching a downloaded movie; as usual the normal TV is garbage.

Yes, try my suggestion for the two pot wiring but don't rap my knuckles if I've got it wrong, maybe someone else can read what I described and offer any opinions as to weather or not that would work if you havn't any fixed resisitors etc to hand.

Silly question: is the motor star or delta wired?

Also, do parameters PD0140 to PD0147 match your motor's characteristics?

The circuit Lawrence has described has given me an idea that will help sort out the final components that need to be fitted.
The 5k pot will be used to control the speed however the resistance value across the track terminals needs to be between 2k and 3k. Make up a parallel resistor using one of the 10k pots by setting it with a multimeter on ohms range and start with 5k. Cover the shaft and don't adjust it while connecting it up to the 5k pot and don't connect the other end of the track to anything. Set the other 10k pot to 8k and cover the shaft and don't adjust it again while connecting it up and do not connect the other terminal. Make sure you NEVER power it up with both of the 10k pots set to minimum resistance as it could blow a soldered in fuse in the controller and will cause tears
Finally look up a pot with a value as close to 2k as you can get and set the pot in parallel with the 5k pot to get the same value with a meter across the pair of pots to as close as you can to the value of the one you choose to order.
With the pot that is set to 8k and with the speed pot set to maximum set the maximum speed you want carefully with the machine running using this 10k pot but do not turn it all the way in the higher speed direction direction. You can adjust the speed pot to see how the span changes and this will tell us how close you are getting to to the final fixed resistor you will need to order and fit to complete the job along with the correct 2k pot.

Like most such devices, its essentially a PLC with an invertor - the PLC will be implemented as a state-machine in a micro-processor, i.e. all the "brains" are in software, not the hardware which is essentially just the interface to the real world.

The upshot of this is even if you can identify the actual chips in use, it won't help much as the problems here are all about software configuration, not the hardware.
