I'm now wondering if it will be of any benefit to install a clutch because I've just made a lot of progress this morning.
Over the last few days I've been browsing the web for Huanyang Inverter 220V 2.2KW remote control information and I've also bought items through eBay to assist. I'm indebted to the person adding the following instructions on the web explaining how to add a remote speed control and I can confirm it was very easy;
Connect both ends of the speed pot across ACM and 10V on the top row of connectors and connect the pot wiper to V1 on the bottom row of connectors. Check parameters PD072 are at 400HZ; PD070 is 0 for 10V control and PD002 at 1 for external speed control.
On my Inverter both PD072 and PD070 were set correctly as default and when I powered up I wondered why the pot didn't work; I then realized I had missed checking PD002 and because I missed this it obviously needed resetting to 1.
The instructions suggested using a 10K linear pot so I bought two of these very cheaply together with pointer knobs through eBay. The pot works brilliantly and I'm most impressed. One thing I immediately noticed though is that less than half of the pots travel is needed so perhaps I need to use a 5K linear pot to give a larger sweep. I'm pleased that the pot actually stops the lathe then with a simple turn of the knob the lathe runs up to full speed giving variable speed between the two.
I've also ordered two push button controls and will have a go at installing these as remote start/stop controls then I can mount the Inverter well away from the lathe to shield it from dust.
To connect the pot I used an old spare scart cable just cutting the connectors off this then gave me plenty of wires to hook up with and cost nothing.
Now the speed control is working I feel it would be beneficial to include some form of stepping the speed in increments with perhaps an indented dial but I'll give this more thought.
I still plan to have a go at making the new prototype clutch just for interest after all I've got the two halves partially turned.
I wanted to add the Inverter information because hopefully it will save others searching for it?
I'm looking forward to using this lathe once winter bites again and I should be snug as a bug in the newly refurbished workshop.
