Union Jubilee Clutch.

Hi,

I'm now wondering if it will be of any benefit to install a clutch because I've just made a lot of progress this morning.

Over the last few days I've been browsing the web for Huanyang Inverter 220V 2.2KW remote control information and I've also bought items through eBay to assist. I'm indebted to the person adding the following instructions on the web explaining how to add a remote speed control and I can confirm it was very easy;

Connect both ends of the speed pot across ACM and 10V on the top row of connectors and connect the pot wiper to V1 on the bottom row of connectors. Check parameters PD072 are at 400HZ; PD070 is 0 for 10V control and PD002 at 1 for external speed control.

On my Inverter both PD072 and PD070 were set correctly as default and when I powered up I wondered why the pot didn't work; I then realized I had missed checking PD002 and because I missed this it obviously needed resetting to 1.

The instructions suggested using a 10K linear pot so I bought two of these very cheaply together with pointer knobs through eBay. The pot works brilliantly and I'm most impressed. One thing I immediately noticed though is that less than half of the pots travel is needed so perhaps I need to use a 5K linear pot to give a larger sweep. I'm pleased that the pot actually stops the lathe then with a simple turn of the knob the lathe runs up to full speed giving variable speed between the two.

I've also ordered two push button controls and will have a go at installing these as remote start/stop controls then I can mount the Inverter well away from the lathe to shield it from dust.

To connect the pot I used an old spare scart cable just cutting the connectors off this then gave me plenty of wires to hook up with and cost nothing.

Now the speed control is working I feel it would be beneficial to include some form of stepping the speed in increments with perhaps an indented dial but I'll give this more thought.

I still plan to have a go at making the new prototype clutch just for interest after all I've got the two halves partially turned.

I wanted to add the Inverter information because hopefully it will save others searching for it?

I'm looking forward to using this lathe once winter bites again and I should be snug as a bug in the newly refurbished workshop.

It's all change here at the moment. Big Al previously mentioned I might have a dust problem in my new workshop and after turning just two items on the lathe I totally agree with him to the point that after doing all the work sorting everything out I've now dumped this workshop; it is being transferred into the garage and the car now sleeps out; this is why it's been raining virtually non stop here for over a week.

I became fed up of running between workshop and garage for materials and tools so once everything is established in the garage I should feel more comfortable.

I've now sold my giant Startrite Volant 24" bandsaw and replaced it with a rather nice old Wilmac bandsaw having a good capacity for its size of 6" deep cut x 12" throat; it takes up much less space than the Startrite and is a pleasure to own and use.

       

I've also sold both my Myford MF 36" lathes losing about £1,000 because they only achieved £227 on eBay for the pair and I had around £1,200 in them. I'm not worried in the least about this because I've had the pleasure of ownership and have saved myself hundreds of hours and even more expense if I had gone ahead as planned to rebuild them.

My Jubilee lathe will also be sold because last week I bought what I consider to be the Rolls Royce of woodturning lathes this being a "Union Graduate". I've admired these Graduates for many years but could ill afford one but last week the chance occurred and I grabbed it. I got a wonderful bargain because it came with lots of very expensive accessories such as face plates and chucks. I had only just moved the Jubilee into the garage and got it fully hard wired in but the Graduate was much too tempting for me to let go.

I swapped the Jubilee with the Graduate removing the new inverter rated motor from the Jubilee and installing it into the Graduate so it is now fully variable speed. When I switched on the Graduate for the first time I was a bit disappointed because it sounded very noisy when I expected it to be whisper quiet? I've removed the head stock bearings and made ready for the new bearings which I ordered through eBay.

                           

I'm also busy making a small wooden "bungalow" for our next door neighbour's cat which is now almost complete; yesterday I applied aluminium primer and today I've undercoated it; two top coats will complete the paint job then I'll apply Creoseal to the under-floor and add felt to the pitched roof; with this off the bench I can then resume setting the garage up as workshop because the garage is upside down during the transition.

   

I've even managed to make a "chatter tool" and try it out on the Jubilee but more of this later; it's a pleasure to get into the garage and have more space also its warmer in the garage with the bungalow sitting on top of it; winter is looking good?

I've been too busy to report everything but this is a rough update. I'll keep popping onto the forum as time permits because GF has always been my favourite forum.

You should have asked me about bearings.
I was asked to refurbish an alternator from an Inspector Morse Jag. I told him it would be a waste of time without fitting new bearings. The parts were under a fiver all in.

It is either the OEM part number or the measured size.
Then after that screen you can choose the actual manufacturer.
So that is where your E bay seller gets them from.

Me thinks it does the car no harm to stand out. Probably dries quicker out and less subject to rust from condensation.

So is it "Colin 4 lathes" at the moment? going down to 3?

Thanks Refugee; As Big Al says yes I'm very much aware of "Simply bearings" and most of the other bearing sites. The Graduate bearings are 6010 & 6208. I bought both brand new and both SKF brand through eBay costing a total £14.24 inc P&P. The 6010 only cost £1.49 plus £2.80 P&P; I doubt I would get these much cheaper elsewhere?

I wanted to use Timken bearings but trying to get a price without having to send a request was hard work so I opted for SKF which are a good brand and certainly cheap enough; a company specializing in Graduate restorations who also sell spares quote £46 for a pair of Graduate bearings?

I remember you posting about Simply Bearings Big Al in fact I bookmarked the site and I checked them out before buying. I could have easily visited Huddersfield Bearings but given the cost of fuel; my time and their rather high prices it's much more convenient and cheaper to shop online which is a pity because I would prefer to support local businesses; its not long ago I was standing in a local store with £220 cash in my hand wanting to buy a Fein Multimaster and the store guy said I hadn't enough money so I returned home and bought the same Fein with the same attachments for over £40 cheaper online with free next day delivery; all the guy had to do was dump the Fein on he counter and take my money?

Thanks Gary, over the last 37 years we have always garaged our car to keep it clean and dry and away from thieves but as we now change our car about every three years there is never a rust problem and the car is always under warranty; it's a huge bonus though in being able to use the garage as a full time workshop; in a few minutes I'm going into the garage and I don't need to pull the car out having to open both doors letting the heat out so in effect the garage feels quite pleasant now.

Yes Gary at the moment I only own four lathes which is a come down because I used to own five but once I get the garage set up I might increase my lathe stock because you can't have too many lathes and I've been thinking about a Boxford AUD; I miss my big Colchester Triumph but it was simply too big for the garage but lovely to own.

The little bungalow is for a cat Gary; the cat has tried its best to adopt Bron and me as its parents for over a year but we now have a new neighbour who has adopted him and calls him Max; I'm making the bungalow for the neighbour in the hope Max will eventually settle at the neighbours house; he's such a lovely little chap but after we had our cat Furball put to sleep last year after being quoted up to £1,000 for vet bills to have him tested and scanned etc we will never own another pet; we paid £720 in one go years ago for one of our other cats for vet treatment; financially its a rip off.

I'd better get cracking before another day disappears.

Thanks Colin, yes the cat has landed on its paws and is now pampered by our next door neighbour who has adopted it.

Nice one Refugee; I hope the heat bulb was taken out in summer or poor fried cat.

Just a quick update on the Graduate lathe restoration. Over the past couple of weeks or so I've put in a lot of time happily working on this lathe. It's now just about completed and has been very heavily modified with new motor and VFD; the new head-stock bearings have transformed it and now it purrs.

The original Hammerite paint was power sanded then given two undercoats and two top coats of top quality machinery enamel applied using a new Purdy 1.5" brush. The weather was dire throughout this restoration making owning spraying equipment a waste of time; it's a good job I've had a bit of practice using a brush because although the undercoat went on well the top coats were more difficult but it sure looks better for the effort.

The center height was rather too low for me so I made a pair of wooden risers lifting the lathe 3" hopefully this will save some backache?

I don't now know if I dare use the Graduate in case I scratch or dirty it.

The garage is slowly being transformed into my new workshop and I put the car out to sleep on the drive about three weeks ago; I've only seen the car dry once since then.

WOW; I think I've caught up a bit at least can have a breather after three weeks solid restoring/upgrading this Graduate.

I have the Graduate running through the controls I removed from the Jubilee which are mounted on the wall behind the lathe but I am about to add additional wiring allowing me to use the original start/stop buttons. I've never had the need previously to understand how relays worked; the relays I've used and wired up have been motor contactors supplied with connection diagrams.

I tried wiring the original start/stop controls and at first couldn't understand why the lathe would only run if I held in the start button and it stopped as soon as the button was released?

I had installed a "latching" button on the Jubilee and this single button controlled both start and stop; I had also added an emergency stop to the Jubilee this too being latching.

I want the Graduate buttons to work correctly neither of them are latching; the start button is the standard momentary push to make and the stop button is push to break. The outcome is that I've now done a bit of web browsing and obtained the information I require together with a circuit diagram I can understand.

I need a relay? OK so I bought a pair of 12V relays through eBay not knowing there were a number of types of relay. I mentioned this to Big Al whilst he was visiting us on Sunday and it turns out I bought the wrong type of relay which by the way they both arrived today. Alan kindly offered to dig out a suitable relay for me which is generous of him and thanks for this Alan; Alan also sent me an eBay number of the correct type of relay I need so as these are cheap I bought two which should arrive shortly.

I'm using the relay in a low voltage signal circuit of 10V to control the 3 phase VFD and I'm being extremely careful not to do anything silly because these VFD's are not cheap and easily damaged. I've got the Graduate running OK so all I now need to do is to incorporate the new relay when it arrives and I'm home and dry. I realize relays are common place in electrical work but don't come under the training of mechanical engineering? I enjoy learning as I go along and it's been interesting researching relays and how they work; there are lots of videos on the subject on YouTube. I'm powering the relay coil through a small 12V PSU independent of the VFD because I don't know how the VFD would react to the relay coil being turned off and it's possibly safer than adding a diode or guessing what current is available at the VFD 10V supply ?

Now back to what I do more naturally which is mechanical engineering. The final job on the Graduate was to sort out the tail-stock. At some previous time the eccentric locking cam has been bodged in fact there was absolutely no sing of the original cam; in its place someone had drilled and tapped off center to accept a set screw which was meant to act as a cam; this set screw was very loose being only located by a few threads; it locates through an eye bolt and at each side of the eye bolt a washer had been added; the threads were mutilated by rubbing against the eye bolt and even the original lever had been replaced by a length of threaded rod the end of which had been covered with plastic tubing.

Had the lathe come from a private seller this sort of bodge wouldn't have bothered me in the least but the Graduate came from a school and sported a sticky label to the its head-stock saying it had only been fully serviced last year.

I've just spent a couple of days sorting the tail-stock out. I've now made a brand new complete spindle/cam and brand new lever. Turning the spindle was easy using the small Clarke lathe but turning the cam on the spindle end in this small lathe was a test of patience because of the huge overhang from the four jaw chuck. With the spindle chucked and running eccentrically there was a real risk of forcing the spindle from the chuck but with a lot of patience and light cuts all went well. The spindle is a precision fit and the cam was turned at maximum diameter just to allow entry into the eye bolt.

The lever was nothing more than a length on BMS and this was threaded 8mm at each end then polished in the lathe under power. The spindle end was drilled and tapped 8mm at an angle to accept the new lever then a new plastic knob was turned and fitted; just for good measure I also made two plastic caps to cover two exposed threads. Everything was given a liberal greasing then assembled and the tail-stock is now working as it should.

Once the relay is added the Graduate will be then completed and ready for some serious turning during winter but before then I'll disappear again whilst I continue to make the garage into my workshop.
