Picked this up at the weekend for a couple of quid
No makers plate anyone seen one before or got any information please

I fear your best bet is to reverse engineer the circuit.

I can't quite explain why and I cannot unquestionably prove this, but it looks like a Vidor eliminator to me. It has a certain 'look': the internal construction; the Hammerite paint; those punched-out louvres . . .

have slowly powered it up and seems to work ok

Depending on the LT voltage 1.5V, 2,0V, or 4.0V a very useful bit of kit for old battery sets.
Check that it is isolated from the mains.
Once it has been brought up slowly, check the Lt volts with a light load and check that it is also DC. and the same on the HT with a light load 10-25 mA.
