I would go for that first one that is discontinued with only 12 left.
It will run cooler that what you have in there now as the on resistance is lower.
The maximum voltage is also higher.
It is cheap too.

Many thanks Refugee for taking the time to supply the information which I very much appreciate.

I don't have a Farnell account but have visited their sales counter on a number of occasions a few years ago. I could have a trip over one day next week.

In the meantime could I please trouble you further and be a pain because last night I browsed eBay and found the following and would like your opinion please?

I will buy four as then I'll have spares whether from Farnell or eBay.

I've also spent some time browsing the model engineer website kindly suggested by Ted. There is an enormous amount of information on this site covering the Clarke control problem; I'll read it further but I believe I need to change the 22uF 50v electrolytic and now that I can see in daylight I've inspected the circuit board; I've easily located the 22uF but there are also five 47uF 50v electrolytics whilst the board is out would it be beneficial to change the lot at one go?

Compared to buying a new board (£130?) the cost of spares is minimal so if there is anything else I could do to upgrade whilst the board is out I'll be happy to do so.

Back again Colin, I think you have enough details regarding the FETs.I couldn't remember what we used but did have a look on RS site and didn't actually find what I was looking for, never though of ebay. I can't get my head round RS site,better when I had a catalogue to look at.
I hope you soon get the lathe working once again. I have a Variac and loaned Derrick it, together with a bridge rectifier until we got his working, only thing was he had to make of few on going adjustment according to load or cut being taken, no real problem. I read some where that some lathe dealers are having their boards made in USA which they claim are more reliable, but are they being sub contracted to China ? Weather here has got warmer at last but with strong gusty winds.Best of luck Ted.

Those FETs on the Ebay link will be too small to fit on your heat sink.
They are in a TO220 package and will be the same size as a 3 terminal 1 amp regulator.
Farnell will often charge for postage on small orders from non account holders but most of there parts are very good.

Thanks Ted for your information; it won't be long before everything is made in China? Yes I was surprised when I went out at 6 o'clock this morning because it felt hot compared to the recent many months of freezing weather; it's now trying to blow our bungalow over but at least it's summer.

I'm pleased I asked Refugee and many thanks for enlightening me; there are lots of components on eBay but it's a waste of money buying the wrong ones.

I've now created a Farnell account and ordered six of your recommended Mosfet's together with a tube of heat conducting compound as kindly recommended by Joe.

Please don't tell anyone you know of a Yorkshire-man spending over £26 at one go; with a minimum order of £20 excluding VAT I'm recovering on oxygen.

I can't thank you enough Refugee for pointing me in the right direction and this applies to others who have posted in order to help me.

Our friend and previous owner of this Clarke lathe sent an email this morning to say he too blew the lathe up whilst taking a hefty cut but he spent a lot of money and bought a brand new circuit board; he is going to post the original faulty board to me so now I can repair both boards at once hence I've bought extra Mosfet's whilst they are still available at a fair price.

I could have driven over to Leeds to collect at Farnell's counter but it just isn't worth the hassle; my order will be delivered next working day free of charge which is very convenient and in future if items are not available through eBay I'll be using Farnell. Previously when I've visited Farnell they have always been very good to me and I felt most welcome; at the time the minimum spend at the counter was only £5.

I've also bought through eBay 25 each (total 50) of the electrolytics fitted to this board; good value at around £3.50 delivered.

I'm easing off a bit because the harder I try the sillier my projects become; all I wanted to do was to turn a bit of metal so now I'm into lathe repairs playing around with electronics and opening a new account with an electronics supplier whilst involving you kind people by asking for advice; my projects are always different but sure are fun. Thanks everyone and hopefully by Christmas I'll have turned the two bits of metal?

At normal SMPSU speeds all the rise times and so on are not normally a problem with MOSFETS.
The important bit is the on resistance and the maximum voltage and package style if you already have the heat sink.
I have an 800 volt one running at 30 volts on the robot that guards my workshop kitchen garden against unwanted digging by visiting animals. They make a hasty departure before any damage and after several meetings with the robot they become reprogrammed to keep off.
They soldier on for ever with an easy job like that.

Hopefully once the board is repaired I'll be able to resist overloading the lathe; yes the board already has the heat-sink Refugee so it should be just a case of exchanging components.

I went to bed last night with today planned ahead. First job was to replace the wheelbarrow wheel with a wheel of twice size then I would concentrate on the Clarke circuit board?

Bron visited the bathroom early this morning and returning to bed informed me there was no hot water. Just before getting up I switched on the central heating and there was no central heating. As I was digging out the central heating phone number there was a knock on our rear door; the door chimes had packed in.

Yesterday I dragged lots of branches from the rear garden and loading them into the car disposed of them at our local tip; this finally cleared the garden. As I looked up the garden this morning another branch had appeared?

The knock on the door was UPS delivering a box from Farnell's; this was top class service because it was only 8:30 and I had ordered online on Sunday. When I opened the box it contained only the heat conducting compound but where were the Mosfet's?

The post man was early this morning visiting us at 10:45; the Mosfet's had arrived together with the 50 electrolytics I had bought through eBay; what brilliant service from both suppliers.

British Gas arrived just after dinner and yet another circuit board had bit the dust; I'm pestered with faulty circuit boards and I just knew the boiler circuit board had failed because everything comes in threes? The Clarke board had failed; our friend Harold has posted the original failed board to us making this two failed boards so the boiler board is number three; I can now relax having my share of failed boards.

The Glen fan heater in the bathroom is also winding me up; it runs for a while then knocks off and remains off until manually re-set which I assume is the thermal link failing; I wish the world would stop just to let me catch up a bit.

After a good moan I got off my backside and wearing my battle gear went into the garage to do some metal bashing. Last year I installed a very small wheel into our wheelbarrow just so that I could use the barrow; the original tubed wheel had split in two. This small wheel although helping just was too small but later I found a wheel twice the size and as the usual prolonged winter got in the way I finally got around to changing the wheel today.

A simple enough job but a fair bit of metal work involved. I could use one of the 2" box section but had to remove the other by angle grinding then cleaning up. This box section was then converted into a bracket using two lengths of 2" angle iron; these in turn were bored at 3/4" diameter on the big drill press then welded into position. The new automatic welding helmet I bought at Rufforth for around £35 made welding a pleasure freeing both hands.

Next I searched for a bit of 3/4" diameter steel bar stock but the only bit I could find was stainless so a length was cut then drilled and tapped 8mm each end; this would be the axle retained in place by washers and a couple of set screws. Ideally I would have painted the new metal but it would look like it had been pebble dashed given the gale now blowing. I doubt the new bracket will rust away quickly?

With the bracket completed it was an easy job fitting it and now the barrow is ready for when I tackle the flood defenses weather permitting. As I put the barrow away into the shed I had a fight because the wind was trying to remove the shed door.

It's now very windy but warm to the front of the bungalow so the central heating is switched off but it remains cold in the workshop. For a change heavy rain is forecast for tomorrow so the heating will be on allowing me to settle down in the workshop to repair the circuit board?

Just another day in paradise and I wonder what tomorrow has in store for me?

Sounds as though you are wining at last Col, and have the smartest wheelbarrow in all of West Yorkshire too by the looks of it.

UPS are like that: They usually get me out of bed in the morning or after I've retired in the evening - never in between. Farnell's often split orders into multiple packages as some come from Leeds and some from Leiage [probably spelt wrong - it's a place in Belgium].
