That was well spotted Lawrence!
What a lot of effort went into designing and building that elegant machine! He obviously knew about the need for a heart-shaped cam to achieve an even back and forth traversing speed and arranged how to correct any unevenness in the turns, but having gone to so much effort to design and build the machine, I wonder which he didn't use a heart-shaped cam in the first place.
I dare say that he may well have designed and built it as an intellectual engineering challenge as much as anything. As he says, white a lot of lath work, and fairly costly in materials I dare say.
Interesting that some many people seem to want to build guitar pick-up coils - I wonder why? I'd have thought they were an easily obtainable off-the-shelf item, but almost all the youtube videos seem to be about guitar pick-up coils. I wonder if there is some mythology along the lines of 'audio-phoolery' that you can somehow make a better pick-up if you wind you own, which must surely be only an occasional thing to, so hardly worth gearing up for, but I guess the same applies to our hobby. Like how many coils, transformers or chokes am I ever likely to want to wind? Not many, but neverthelss, the topic fascinates me.
