Another set passed to me by Dennis, and initally a right basket case. Intact, all complete, back wrinkled but no damage. Shame that the top rear corner of the case had suffered a massive ding, splintering the veneer right back to the plywood in a jagged triangular tear. Some work with a craft knife cleaned up the damage whilst odd section of veneer offcut built up the damaged underneath to a level where a new piece of top veneer could be grafted in. An overall case sand, stain and an application by dibber of satin varnish brought the case up to a decent level. Of note, these 1959 models were some of the first to suffer the wrath of the man with the staple gun, and there are quite a few staples holding this set together.
Inside, in good nick other than a couple of waxies, one of which had gotten hot and melted the wax off into a sludge on the bottom of the case. Generally ok, all valves read ok although the DM70 tuning indicator had seen better days and was low emission. A general spruce up and removal of muck restored normal operation. These are universal sets, and the large dropper puts out a prodigious amount of heat, witnessed by the large fibre heat deflector hood built into the rear panel. Not a great fix, the case had had a hard time but a nice working model.
