Ivory Bush VHF90

Hi All,
I thought it was about time I posted this in the restoration section now that I have hopefully (fingers crossed) rewired the set.

I promised a good friend that I would restore a valved radio for him to listen to and I selected my second ivory VHF90. As you know from my many posts this set was beset with problems which have occurred from severe over heating and a lash up repair at some point in the past.

It has been recapped with all the waxies and hideous brown Hunts caps removed. Good practice recommends removing one cap at time and testing. I was not able to do this as each time a touched a lead in the set, the insulation fell off from the heat that it must have sustained. Much of this wiring has been replaced including the replacement (twice!!) of that pesky 500k log switch with a 470k replacement (yes, this time the terminals have stayed in place).

The power resistors have been replaced, and 'that' cap replaced with a suitable suppression cap.

The next stage is to recheck all of the wiring etc to see for any obvious faults or shorts, insert the valves and slowly bring it up to power.........more to follow.

any reason why you have not changed/tested C56 on the trader sheet, It is the 2uf job? There should be around 60v there so it may be a bit leaky.
Just a thought.

Hi Mark,
I did test this with my ESR meter (as with the other electrolytics) and they are test as healthy albeit not under load. Thanks for pointing this out as they may need to be replaced so I shall bear this in mind.

No problem Rob, C50 also, but may not be a problemo, load will find out the leaky ones, so give it some juice.

Hi All,
I don't know whether to laugh or cry.......its finished and working. It has a great sound in VHF although I have noted that it picks up mains hum at low volume which completely disappears at a medium volume. It does take an age to warm up and the dial lamps are very dim but good news is that it certainly doesn't run anywhere near as hot as a DAC90a.

Angie really likes it and doesn't want me to give it away until I said I have another one..............maybe early next year!!

I wish you'd invest in some more wire colours
Have you put the Intermodulation hum cap back across the switch?
Next a Fenman II for a real VHF set.
