It's a 1000µF and it's MEANT to be there; it doubles the output albeit with poor regulation but gives the crutial few extra volts for those odd-ball trannies that need 18V.

According to that wiki link the two principle capacitors are shown in a different arrangment to that shown in Joe's diagram.

You're right, assuming that the wiki diagram is correct - my brain still isn't functioning properly.
The two caps should (effectively) be across the bottom two diodes see attached.

I'm sure that how my diagram is drawn is how it's physically connected. That said, it's obviously different to the other diagrams. It works as it is but methinks some fiddling on the morrow will be instructive.
