I've often wondered about that too. On the one hand taking the killer connectors off DAC90s and hard-wiring the lead makes sense on safety grounds but it's a modification so probably opens a legal/regulatory can of worms.

Yes that's what I was wondering, we need a lawyer who restores radios.. There must be some case law somewhere.

if you look at a modern circuit (post 1980 ?) there are componets that are marked safty! and must only be changed for parts recomended by the maker .they include mains switches, filtercaps, fuses ,and any number of other bits and pieces.as far as i know it would be illegal to repace them with parts that did not meet or exceed these specs .before that time there were no such
issues. in fact the makers seemed to use what ever was on hand.
i would like to know how many people got killed or badly hurt useing ac/dc sets.i would bet its very few.
i could go on about set top boxes no earth and only a small transformer to isolate the user sockets from the live mains.

A lot of modern things confuse me. Something I've wondered about are things like video recorders having fuses in both the live and neutral. Presumably it's because they've either got figure-8 leads or may be used with 2-pin plugs on the continent.

A agree with you about not many people being hurt by AC/DC sets. Let's face it, a mains shock under most circumstances wouldn't cause anything worse than some bad language. The difference now is that people don't expect to take responsibility for their own safety and there are legal/regulatory requirements to protect idiots.

There are huge differences between Dangerous, Not Safe and Doesn't Meet Regulations.

Not to sure about that...depends how you catch it and what your skin resistance is, the skin on my hands is like leather and then some due to the kind of things I have to do with my hands, I expect if it were measured it would be several if not tens of megohms, I have regularly inadvertantly made a path from HT to deck and felt nothing.
On the otherhand I remember when colour TV first came out, you remember the big dual standard coffins,
setting up the purity etc without a suitable mirror when on field call usually ended up fiddling blind, being aware of the potential shock hazzards of this practice in a customers house in the corner of their living room with a coal fire blazing away 'cos they wanted to wash the dishes tended to make one more nervouse and sweaty, being aware of this and the fact the my skin resistance was now heading south due to the threat of such a shock seemed to compound the effect and sweated even more and also because we had 12 more call outs to do before the days end and therefore under pressure, all I can say is that a belt under those circumstances was certainly a sobering experience.
We got a call from a customer once who had an engineer sent out to her to fix the telly she said you had better send another one the one you sent isn't very well, turned out to be live chassis, earthed outer braiding on aerial and a case of oversight, we went out and he certainly must have caught the shock bad, his face looked like he needed a blood transfusion..

Now I'm really !!xxx!! cheesed off!!!
I've virtually rewired, recapped etc the VHF90 and in soldering on the mains lead to the NOS 470k switch, one of the b****y tags has come off the new pot. I'm fuming as it wouldn't go back on at all. Its now going to need a new pot.

Is it me or am I just unlucky?
