There's another book that looks at this which is K.R. Sturleys 'Radio Receiver Design'. Lots of formulae and undoubtedly way above my pay grade.

Although it was published in 1947, the maths doesn't change with the passage of time, but I'm afraid that a lot of it goes 'whoosh' over my head! My skills, such as they are, have always been rooted in construction rather than design, which has often led to dissappointment due to my faithful replication of errors in published magazine articles over the years, often not corrected until months later. These days, if you wait three months after the original article has been published, you find that some IC or another has ceased production and supplies have been exhausted. I've never got into PICs though many designs use them to good effect to simplify construction enormously.

Yes that website is really useful. I came across it last year when searching for the Radio Designers Handbook which I ended up buying a copy of anyway. There is a really interesting book, all 264 pages of it, on probes for test equipment which I'm reading at the moment.

Thanks to all concerned for the PDF tech books link(s) that site is a new one on me so I have stuck it in my favourites, some very large downloads but I think I will give one or two of them ago until I can maybe buy some of the books on ebay or wherever.
Just to clarify that on the maths side of AC/Radio Theory my skills are pretty basic, if the functions are not on my micky mouse calculator then that's the end but I can usually get the general drift of things on the circuitry side. I think however that to grasp the concept of real and imaginary numbers is worthwhile as we deal with the results of them all the time in our hobby eg: tuned circuits, power factor etc.
