Hi Folks, following on from my earlier thread on insulation of a free standing boiler.
I've seen a lot of articles about gas saving, carbon footprint etc as well as a lot of negative comments and people who have "lost " money on the deal due to very extended payback periods; together with the "if its working OK don't change it" advice.
Some thoughts please on the following situation:
I have a 30 year old Gloworm 65-80 floorstanding gas boiler with comventional flue. It does emit some kettling noises but it will be flushed/ de-scaled in the summer.
It is connected to a well insulated cylinder and is a fully pumped, but open vent system with 4 zone valves that close the whole system down when all zones are satisfied.
In the summer months an immersion heater is used for hot water with the boiler turned off (say 8 to 12 weeks max), running about 1 hour/ day or less.
I intend to add a solar coil at the bottom of the cylinder, run from a 1M sq solar panel of home design.
I have a 5 bed detached house; 600ft ASL, well insulated and generally protected from the worst of the prevailing winds by the other houses in the row.
Typicial gas cost are £1200 pa.
I had thought of replacing the boiler with a modern condensing unit (not combi) and retaining the rest of the system.
I believe the new boiler would be a balanced flue type that would be fitted into the existing vertical chimney of about 9m length, with no bends. The utility/boiler room should not then need full air ventilation and I have access to an internal condensate drain.
I intend doing the work myself, with flue and gas connections by a friend who is a registered installer.
Can anyone recommend suitable boilers makers/ models and an indication of cost, plus some ideas on reliability?
Thanks, Ed
