Grundig 3028 Cabinet Restore

Thanks David, I guess I'm more into the restoring than collecting so the more daunting the task the better! This one has certainly taken a bit longer than anticipated but seeing it (and listening to it) now makes it all worthwhile. Hopefully I'll get the T/F sorted out in the not too distant future.

Ah the ol' auto-text - I assume the 'totally angry' comment means 'totally agree' since David's post already made me blush!

To play my MP3's I have two transmitters - one is the SStran AMT3000 which comes as a kit, the other is an FM transmitter by Belkin (Tunecast II).

The AM kit is probably not what you'd call a beginners kit but its pretty straightforward to build and sounds great. The FM one is intended for use in the car - to connect an mp3 player to the in car radio. For the 3028 this is definitely the better option since it is very short range and the sound quality is the best. You don't need any external aerials for the Grundig since it has both AM and FM integrated.

Since my other radios are AM only, I use the SSTran for those.

I will let other experts on the team comment on legality of use of radio transmitters in the home

One of the guys has a 3028 chassis with a good t/f - and a glass dial - so, after a short pause I hope to get stuck in for the final push. If the second chassis has a working clutch mechanism then Nirvana will have been reached

Hi Paul, you're far too modest - that looks pretty fine to me! Now that mine is in the front room it is definitely a talking piece when people stop by. Alas, having now demo'd it to various people the clutch is getting to the point where I won't be able to use it much longer.

I particularly like your cabinetwork and overall the restoration must be highly inspirational to others encouraging them to get stuck in and have a go on one of their own sets. It must give you immense satisfaction to stand back and admire it with pride; you deserve it; very well done indeed.

Thank you Col, I'll admit that I enjoy doing the video clips and sharing almost as much as the work itself. When I started as an apprentice I remember the prevailing philosophy of keeping knowledge 'secret' which I never liked. I enjoy the way we all share experience and advice for the greater enjoyment of the hobby for all. Of course few of us here are using this 'hobby' to pay for the roof over our heads, etc. so it's easier to be open. Mind you, my other hobby is lutherie and I'm pleased to say the same openess exists in that community despite the fact that many make their living from it.

I've got a second 3028 chassis which will hopefully provide the remaining spares I need to complete this Grundig project. The only problem is my son in UK has it so I'll have to get over there in the car to pick it up and well the weather is hardly suitable for long drives at the moment. I don't dare risk the glass dial surviving the Post or even DHL. With a bit of luck I'll get over around Easter time.
