Sailor 16T Danish radio

I picked this radio up at the NVCF in May. And have just powered it up today and it is working fine. Made in 1962 and will work on 12/24/32 volts.

That was a nice find Kevin - it looks in pristine condition, given the environment that it was used in. I seem to recall that it was covered in a back issue of Radio Bygones - I'll have to leaf through them to see if I can track the article down. I think they're nice and roomy inside should they every need repairing.

Hi Kev,
I'm glad you managed to sort out the power supply for this and got it up and running.
I agree with David, its in very good condition which suggests that its original owner must have taken good care of it whilst in its working life.

Hi Kevin,

I've trawled through Radio Bygones, and it's not there - the article on a Sailor radio was in fact covered in the Winter 2009 BVWS Bulletin, but it was a Sailor 66T, which though similar in appearance to yours, isn't identical. The coverage and controls are similar, but oddly, the dial is the reverse of yours, reading in frequency low to high clockwise. The 66T also has five set crystal controlled frequencies, (such as 2182, the international distress frequency), which the 16 T does not. The article is interesting, and covers the construction of an external 12V PSU and speaker as the set - like yours, has no internal speaker, and is designed either to work on an internal 9V dry battery, (six 1.5 cells) or external power, with a selector switch for that, which enables external voltages of 10-15, 20-30, or 30-40 Volts. I'll drop you a PM with further info Kevin.

Sailor Radios were made by SP Radio in Aalborg, Denmark.

Why Denmark? Why not - nowhere in Denmark is far from the sea, and Denmark has always had an active marine-based industry, for which Aalborg is well situated to cater for. I’m not sure if SP Radio is still in business – it was in 2000. They seem to have been in their heyday in the 1960s. Nicely built radios, roomy inside, and of course, in strudy water resistant cabinets. The styling looks right for boats too.

I do have the circuit (but not the service manual) of the Sailor 16T, which I've appended below. You'll note that it uses four AF117s (arrrrgh!), and two OC604s, and two AC106 in a push-pull output stage, which I'm not familiar with OC604s - Presumably they're similar to OC44s? It also has an AF101 in the BFO, making nine transistors in total.

The 240 volt to 12 Volt DC power supply for the Sailor 16T went up in smoke when i fitted a new power lead and put the power on. So back to the work bench. After fitting a 0.1 UF 50 volt Ceramic disc and 2 Electrolyic Capacitors 4700 uf at 16 volts and a 2200 uf 25 volts and 2 voltage Regulators L7805CV/L7812CV it ls now working.
