Hi.

Well I think I have taken on a restoration that might not be viable.
I received this set some months ago and I did an inventory at the time and quoted an approximate price. Since then some health issues have come in the way and other reasons why I have not given the set more attention.
Over the last week though I have been going over things and making a plan of action.
I have though hit two massive problems, one is surmountable but the other a major issue, there are other issues that may be trouble later on too.
OK so here we go. T1 the mains transformer has shorted turns, I was suspicious of it as it was only held in my one bolt and wires were snipped, feeding it with supply it shatters a 5 amp fuse, so a rewind is required.
The next issue is the band switch that switches between the radio bands and TV, It's basically been butchered, three wafers are scrap and two are in a poor state, its also seized (most likely be able to release it)
As an aside the CRT has zero emission.
Virtually all the rubber wiring is perished and wires have been cut in a number of places.
I have obtained caps etc for the job.

I think the only way forward is a donor chassis, perhaps easier finding a needle in a haystack.

Not sure now what to do or how to proceed with this. I may just return the monies I got up front less the time I've spent so far and wash my hands of the job. Will be the first restoration job I have to admit defeat with.

Do you mean the 563A? It's a heavy brute! I bought the one that had been restored by the late Brian Cuff.

Typically odd Philips design. The Pye B16T is earlier, performs well and is much simpler. Though it doesn't include a radio.

I agree it sounds the sort of thing you couldn't be paid to do for a stranger and would be an act of love and madness if you or close friend owned it.
Replacing a bandswitch is possible, but huge effort.
Transformer rewind expensive
Replacing all the wires is tedious, but maybe not as bad as bandswitch (done both!).
I don't need to say anything much here about the difficulty of replacement CRTs (any rejuvenation is luck and often shortlived), or difficulty of getting it home in one piece.

Even in unlikely event of a donor chassis, it will need work and still the tube issue.

I'd give it back, and the money. But I'm biased. I've had so much grief on the last few restorations for others that even if it's rare I'll tell them to keep it for display. I'm not doing any more for anyone. Especially not an Eddystone. I have a 1928 Marconiphone that someone completely disassembled and someone else later gave to me. I will foist it off on someone very young, keen and naive.

What exactly is the owner going to do with it if it was working?

Yes a Typo a 563A.
This is a very rough set, possibly one of the worst I've encountered, butchered and hacked about with, the issues of course are the ones I see but who knows what else I might find.
Jeffrey you are very lucky to have Brian's set, a well documented restoration which again was an awful lot of work, hold onto it you are very privileged to own it.
