To me it sounds like the wave change switch contacts are slack if pushing them onto the switch rotor brings the reception back. It could also be the rivets that hold the switch together that have worked loose.
They can be tightened with care.

thank you for that but i think they are ok because when i put the pencil on the wire only it does the same thing,its like the pencil is acting as an aerial someway.

Try it with a cocktail stick so that there is no chance of a signal getting in through the pencil lead.
The tool needs to be non conductive in order to validate this test.
Touching the wire will flex the switch wafer and show that the contacts are loose once you use a plastic or wooden probe.

The fault could be anywhere from RF through to the detector, that also includes the oscillator.
You can eliminate any frequency determining components in the oscillator by checking that the stations you can receive correspond to the correct part of the tuning dial/scale, if they are way out then the RF tuned circuit won't be tracking with the oscillator, ie: low gain.
Make sure that the RF primary and secondary coils read very low resistance to the chassis on all connections pertaining to the waveband selected, if they don't then that will need investigating.

Hi Laurie,

Lawrence is referring to the aerial coils on the ferrite rod. On LW the primary is L2 and the secondary L3. On MW the primary is L4 and the secondary L5.
