I used to have to fiddle a bit with LCD displays like that with some equipment I used to work with. If they got the minutest out of alignment there was often the problem of missing segments or even flashing ones. I am not sure about lighting. I always thought the white panel actually gave a background for contrast of the identified segments to be displayed. That is why LCD's were not ideal in many situations as they were always dark but more modern ones did have some form of illumination. The equipment I worked with also had a VFD display version too as well as various differences through the years so I cannot be certain of fine detail. I think I have a service manual somewhere but it won't say anymore than replace the unit as they never went as far as component / module repair. With regard to alignment I do remember it being critical and I only managed to fix one or two as the display was crimped together and the pressure needed to be even over the whole display. That was with simple, single line text displays.

I hope to get a look on Monday.
One thing is of course is the Chinese manufacture and for definite the lack of parts.
I will try to persue Oakington for the part as I'm still a registered business.

Recent changes have made it law that items should be repairable so will hit them with that line.... We shall see

I realised that Rob has already spoken to Majority but I've requested a display etc. I also mentioned the law regarding the length of time an item should last. So let's see what they come up with, I don't have an issue with giving them a good hard poke.

Id originally thought it was generic but it doesn't appear to be.

Yes, Trevor (Murphy v310) is absolutely correct. The other 1602a1 module does not look the same at all to the one in this Majority radio.

Like the HD44780, the "1602" is a generic LCD controller - it doesn't define the display, however it's normally used on simple 2 or 4 line character displays. As it's a generic controller, communicating with a uP on one side and activating LCD elements on another, it can be used for custom LCD displays too.

If you look at photos of the front of this radio it's immediately apparent that the display is a custom module.

Fwiw, it looks like a COB controller and may or may not be 1602-based. The actual controller type is academic in this case as the module is a custom one and only a like-for-like replacement will suffice.

Well I eventually got a reply from Majority. Extremely unhelpful and a further communication was sent. I'm using my business name etc (still registered) but they seem oblivious to how things work in the UK. If they don't cooperate I'll forward all the communications to trading standards.

This often happens when a business gets involved especially when you give them a prod.
