I didn't realise this is on three forums. I have to concur with Mark as it's very confusing for the mentors and often you'll be fired different advice by many people.
There are many different ways to fault find, none are essentially wrong with the exception of firing components at something Willy nilly, you learn nothing and increase the chance of man made faults.

I do have a sig gen with the capacity to generate 455kHz, so will try again later today.

I can follow a CD (I think). Yes I am a beginner. I need an idiot's guide to transistors and radios in general. Googling reveals many out there!

PS Re: the diode --all I was planning to do was to connect it without soldering to the copper part of the pcb. I don't fancy removing the can around the coil. R.

It would be handy if a schematic was posted up, is there copyright on Hacker stuff...seems to be a very well guarded secret manual wise so far as free view is concerned without signing up for anything.

Mind I was allowed all use of Trader sheets by IPC Magazines, both Mark Ryding and Chris Whiting know about it. Can PM you full info if you need it

I can't find the schematic, trader or otherwise without paying or signing up to something, just wondering why, Hacker is a common enough make.

I anyone has one then post it up in the forum if legal to do so.

The only Hacker manual I've got is for the RP38a as a series of somewhat grotty JPG files.

Hacker are not Trader at all. They are in R&TVS. The RP25 is in volume 1970-71 according to the cumulative index that's widely available. My scanner is giving trouble so can't readily scan it.

I get the feeling that some confusion has happened over the circuit being positive earth.
Those transistor voltages have been measured with the meter negative on the battery negative.
This will include the voltages across the decoupling components leading to confusion.
Can the measurements be done again with one of the meter leads on the positive battery terminal.
We also need to establish if this set is not one of the odd ones with decoupling components in both power rails.

I would refer back to my post #11, its the willy nilly component replacement that inevitably leads to this confusion as to what is really faulty. I would echo Mark, Stop It!
Simple fault finding will work much better.

As I've said, it's on the Yahoo Hacker Radio group. It's free to sign up, and the manuals found there are free. I scanned a fair few of them myself. We do ask - though obviously can't stop - people to not distribute them.

If we wanted to put them here on our archive, we would need to speak to the people who run the Hacker Radio group. All three concerned are members here (including myself, though Paul and Ian are the main driving force behind it and have done an amazing job setting up one of the best vintage radio resources around). Last time we discussed it - a long time ago, admittedly - we decided that the status quo was preferable. OK, the Yahoo Groups user experience has taken a major turn for the worse since then, but it's still quite easy to access the files.

Failing that, some Hacker manuals - including this one - can be found on Paul Stenning's DVD. And Radio Museum.
