I've got a couple of 12" paper-cone Speakers which should sound suitably awful and most of the other necessary bits, so I could do the Electronics and you could do the Cabinet.

I wish I could say that woodwork was my strength as I would build my own cabinets. I would really love to build small guitar amps as a hobby.

Rob, you don't need much woodworking skills to make guitar amp cabinets as they are covered with a rexine type cloth, just glue and screw everything and glue and screw reinforcing blocks to the joints. Basically decent plywood, some PVA and a saw plus a few other tools.

It's an informative website, from which I was quite surprised how compact these little amps are - you don't get any real impression from the pics. The speaker is 1" x 8" and the cabinet 14" x 7" x 7.5". As to the cabinets, originally they were made of 'solid pine' (not that pine can be said to be all that solid) and later, made of particle board (chipboard as we'd call it). Some guitar aficionados claim that the sound is better in the pine cabinets. I make no comment.

From the sound clips, the amp seems to give a good account of itself.

The 'Barker 88' radio used two 6V6s in push pull to deliver 8 Watts. ('88' - 8 valves, 8 watts, one of the valves being a Y63 magic eye).

I guess you could poke a guitar into the gram socket of such a radio for a practice amp, but that's not the point - it wouldn't be a Fender Vibro-Champ would it?
