Which all in one printer to buy?

SWMBO was overjoyed at my anti-hoarding move - another feather in my cap there! I am pushed for space in the little study/work area I have and so I have space now for a couple more Roberts or Hackers ....... but only if I sneak them in

Not so for me.

Price of ink and "liquid gold", well most put cheapo refill cartridges in so that for them isn't true either.

Even if you buy the proper cartridges how much does a colour print cost? Not much compared to a beer! (Yeah! I know some don't touch the stuff!).

100 quid - 6 for postage for an all in one, cheap as chips... How can they survive? with most putting in refills !!

Back 20 odd years ago I used to service and repair HP Laser Jet printers (Mk 1, 2, 3, 4 etc) built on die cast chassis and with discrete replaceable components. I could keep them gong with some spares year in year out. Actually took a MK 1 or 2 to the tip, still wkg fine but it was likely to give me a hernia! What did they cost? I don't know but certainly thousands !!

Didn't matter about the cost of cartridges: no home user could justify buying one. I only got mine when they changed over to later stuff.

Nice one Colin; you won't be smuggling in a radiogram then?

As you know Gary I'm 100% miserable because I don't drink; smoke; do drugs and detest sport but I still don't like being ripped off when buying printer ink.

If printer/all in one manufacturers charged a decent price up front for their goods then perhaps they could bring the price of ink down to match their non OEM competitors after all these suppliers of cheap cartridges must make a profit or they wouldn't be selling them?

I've just paid £99.99 for my new Canon all in one; would Canon actually lose out if I was charged say £150 for the all in one then could buy OEM cartridges at their competitors prices? I certainly would not buy compatible cartridges if I could buy originals for a similar price.

Take me as an example; I've now bought the Canon all in one and perhaps Canon has made a profit but how much further profit are Canon going to gain from me when I buy compatible ink cartridges refusing to pay such high prices for Canon cartridges?

I've only ever used genuine Canon ink in mine. I've never had a moments trouble with mine, and I can't help suspecting that buying the right consumables is a factor there. When new it seemed a shame to take chances with such a nice bit of kit, and even though it's rather old now, I still think it's worth the investment.

That's just my feeling on the subject - everyone else will have their own view.

Unfortunately NON OEM cartridges and inks are not the same or as good as the makers ones. Certainly not for Epson anyway. A friend has the same 6 colour printer as me but uses cheapo refills. For photographs the initial image is not as good, particularly in the black and if left in daylight they deteriorate pretty quick. Ones with Epson ink and paper that were left on an east facing window were still hardly changed a year later.

But if you want an ephemeral image for some purpose then use them. You may need occasional nozzle cleans though.

Oh! and I forgot to say that the re-fillers / cheapo merchants are parasites! They don't have to recoup any money from the development of the printers or the ink. How much time and money do the big boys put into just getting the ink right? Bet its lots as they say prints are good for 200 years in accelerated life tests on the ones I buy. Don't need that much but if I'm going to a lot of trouble to make a dial for a radio I don't want it to fade away or change drastically in a few years. Same for photos I display.

Whats the outlay for the parasites? just some cheap ink cloned somewhere in China.

I'm always asked to re-cycle my genuine empty cartridges, a bag being provided but why should I help the re-fillers? So in the tip they go!!
