How bad does it have to be before its a scrapper set?

The plastic trim is binned, replaced by braided nylon rope.
It is simply edge glued and I think it looks good, it hides a multitude of sins.

It does look well.

The back is 6mm polycarbonate, I need to find a good photo' of the original back to establish the layout of the cooling slots

Why Polycarbonate? Rather than hardboard, MDF, or even layers of cardboard glued (which I intend trying).

I wonder is the chassis I have, missing mains & audio transformers from a Pye 19?

Even the basic Pye sets work very well. The finished result looks OK.

A) I have some.
B) I have no hardboard
C) I whitened the inside of the cabinet to cover the sooty stains
D) Its different but easily replaced
E) I just wanted to try it, I thought it will be easy to route the slots, its easy to work.

I know its odd but believe that there was a manufacturer who chromed the chassis and I thought the Pye blue chassis would look good.

That has turned out well Sam. The rope was a good idea, I thought at first it was that plastic channel stuff you might find edging raw edges of thin fibreglass, then I read your description.

Scott had chromed chassis? Also maybe a gazzilion valves. Or am I mixing two sets?

Yes, RAP. Scott was the mad number of valves. Some Chromed RAP even had plate glass backs (with an air gap)!

They also experimented with modular designs. Choice of RF and AF modules on that one.


My wreck is T19D, says so on the plate. At least the sockets are still on it. Only volume control, audio transformer, mains transformer, cabinet, back, scale and mains lead missing.
I can colour laser print onto polyester film and put that behind glass.
I have a mains transformer from a Philips that was missing scale, all the sockets and audio transformer.
I have audio transformers.
I might have the octal valves, or a nearby friend may have them.
Now what sort of box?

There are a couple of RAP sets at the Dulwich Museum. They are rather a like a pair of semi-detached houses, one is right handed, the other left. Gerry Wells always used to say they were made for the likes of successful greengrocers in Romford.

  Well Mike, I'll throw down the challenge to you to fix it and find/make a cabinet.
Yours sounds easy compared with mine providing the IF transformers are not coreless.
Instead of glass, acrylic sheet? easier to cut and drill.
You have the advantage of no nasty plastic trim to cause you mental turmoil.
Output transformer is a bit trick with its feedback winding for the complex tone control.

Easy, go for it!

Mike you have it even easier!

No EBL31, its a straight EL33 and the output transformer is without the feedback winding.
 Should be a cinch, I'll look forward to seeing it done.
