Just had a call from a hack at a Canadian TV network. Since she didn't have any idea about how Canadians paid for their TV I told her that I was terminating the call. Had she bothered to brief herself about the differences between the UK and Canadian models she would have got her piece. I wasn't willing to do a basic education job like that.
I looked it up afterwards and found that Canada is like the US. All advertising and subscription funded.
I suppose the truth is that *I* wanted to be briefed on the Canadian model so I could do a sensible interview and was asking her to do that. The licence fee is a strange concept to those low voltage folk across The Pond and either the reporter or I would need to explain the different cultures to make it sound sensible.
