I totally agree with the sentiments expressed in this thread and, BMUS, don't worry about not being able to repay favours - they're not done for repayment but simply on a "you need, I've got and don't really need" basis and the pleasure is in the giving, not in a reward - that sounds awfully trite but it's not meant to!!

A few weeks back, a member of this Forum made enquiries here about acquiring a particular type of radio. In response, another member offered him a particular radio, FOC, less p & p charges. Apparently, that particular radio was not what the enquiring member wanted - so the offer was respectfully declined. Now purely by chance, that particular radio is one that I have always had a longing to acquire: so I contacted the donating member accordingly. I am now in possession of said radio at a cost to me of the p & p only.
Such generosity, in my experience, is rare & I am very appreciative.

The names of the members & the details of the radio have deliberately been witheld in this tale. If the donor wishes to identify himself - then that is his perogative; I respect his privacy, not that he has specifically requested it in this matter.

Just to try to bring a little hope into this discussion: a true story. The names have been deliberately omitted for obvious reasons.

Several months ago, a certain well-know item of Amateur Radio equipment was offered for sale (not on this Forum); there were many responses, including mine. I didn't get the item; another member did. Several months later, said member contacted me and said: "I don't think I'm ever going to get around to sorting this item out. As you did say that it was an item that you always wanted" (this is true), "I'm now offering it to you for what I paid for it".
Needless to say, I said "Thank you!" And promptly went to collect, el pronto.

This is very true. When I was just starting out with record collecting, I was helped along the way by another collector and given FOC some records which I otherwise would have had difficulty finding. I still have them today over 30 years later. I to do the same and have given records to other collectors just starting out...and hope that they will do the same in years to come. It gives me a great deal of pleasure beyond anything you get from selling them.
