Adding to the comments byPeterScott #14.  His strange tube is the RCA 3DP1A, with the central pin in the screen. Intended as a radio compass.  I attach the data sheet which shows some of the circuitry.
The comments by David djrm #15 and Jeffrey ppppenguin #16.  The 6" CRT VCR97 is the Mullard ECR60 or GEC 1601A previously E4504/B/16 CV960/CV1385, with P1 screen (green medium persistence). Or 1646A previously E4504/M/16, CV966 with P7 screen (blue with long yellow tail). Or 1608 or E4504/E/11, CV1391 with P11 screen (short blue).
The VCR517 appears to be the GEC variant, with five different CV numbers corresponding to the various screen types. CV1591 to CV1595.
The different type numbers adopted to indicate the phosphor was different for each manufacturer, and there were several changes in the 1950s/1960s. By the late 1970s, it had settled down to a single US system (the Pxx), and most European & Mullard/Philips had adopted their common system (eg D13 screensize-47 serial type/ GM phosphor. GEC/MOV continued to use their own system. I attach a summary of the different phosphors and the type numbers used to indicate them.
The WirelessWorld scope of 1963 & 1964 used a 3" tube, either Sylvania-Thorn SE3A (following their own rules) or the Mullard-Philips DH7-78, (using the old Mullard rules). Both nice pda tubes. The later WW 50Mhz Oscilloscope of 1975 uses the D14-47GM (the eventual European- Brimar-Mullard standard).
The makers also frequently added additional numbers/letters to indicate the graticule marking.

Bill, thanks for resolving the mystery. My speculation about radial scan was heading in the right direction, though along way from a bullseye. It's still a very odd tube.

Many thanks Bill for the tube information. I see the tube has the usual X and Y plates and that the central electrode is used to deflect the spot along the radius of a circular trace. The circular trace is obtained in the usual manner using 90 degree phase shift circuits as shown in the data sheet. Armed with the part number I have found some more information here https://www.radiomuseum.org/tubes/tube_3dp1.html including some images of a circular trace modified in this way. With a bit of luck one of the old wartime display units will find me one day... Very nice, For no particular reason I've attached a couple of pictures from my own oscilloscope toying. I'll have to contact him to arrange a place to transfer. The A64 A1 junction is nearby, there is a lay-by near the roundabout. Maybee a coffee stop at Tadcaster would be an idea too. I'm the other side of Malton, a bit further away but could offer refreshments here.

Do you want anything for the tubes?, I should have asked before.

Looking forward to getting back working on the old scope, in the meantime I've been busy making a new test system for some of my old 400Hz aircraft instruments. I have also repaired some 400Hz power supplies which were at a friends collection gathering dust.
