Just a thought, Have you tried resoldering the pins on the 25Z* valve? Lots of these american valves are poorly soldered in my experience.

Hi, yes the wires into the large pins of those UX type valves can go dry jointed but unfortunately the original 25Z5 really did have an OC heater. 25Z5 tubes can bought from Continental eBay sellers, for example this one in Belgium: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/National-Union...Sw4GVYIM7r
Same seller has the smaller bulb version.

Same tube is dirt cheap in the States but the postage to the UK ain't.
