I'm now on my 3rd Skoda since having bought a 4x4 Octavia in 2002. Where we live, above the snow line on the south side of Bradford 4WD helps in winter. I changed it for a 2WD Octavia in 2009 just before two of the worst winters so last year changed it for a 4x4 Yeti which so far hasn't put a wheel wrong in the snow.
30 years ago I'd never have considered Skoda but since the VW takeover they have improved out of all recognition as witnessed by the high ratings in the various surveys. The Skodas I've owned have been the most complex cars packed with electronics but have been the most reliable, much more reliable that the Volvo we had.
Before getting my first one I priced up the equivalent Audi which came out about £6000 more expensive even though I was told the Audi and Skodas were built on the same production line.
My wife has a Fabia, bought at the same time as my last Octavia but unfortunately it wasn't a BOGOF deal.
As to Skoda jokes, the joke is probably on those who do not have one.
