Do you know if the motor is straight repulsion, or repulsion-start/induction-run? In other words is there a mechanism for shorting the commutator at speed? That type of motor here typically has a ring of copper segments under the commutator which expands from centrifugal force. I'm just thinking that if the segments are at all dirty they won't contact the commutator properly, and the motor will be running as a partial squirrel-cage, and I imagine that would be quite noisy.
