Hi, thanks for all the replies. On further investigation it does have 4 transistors in the output stage hiding under the turntable. I'll follow up on all the links mentioned.

I think such hybrid portables are rarer than hybrid car radios.

Is it a spring or electrically driven turntable?

Maybe one of the last spring driven electronics was the Sony transistor based portable reel to reel tape-recorder.
