hi jo i dont know about a brief main-stream life companies like naim used them up till the 90s 5pin used for midi interface and unlike rca input /output all signal levels were standerdised so made interconecting audio gear simple

Bit of an update - I went to do the mod on the Gram input on my other PYE P53 and found a whole can or worms waiting. If you fancy seeing a guy down a hole when it comes to trying to get it working, have a look -

I've ordered up some solder tags strip so I can re-wire the offending section but even then I'm not sure I'll be out of the woods. Ah, it's all a learning experience anyway!

Of course with any live chassis equipment (or even something which may end up throwing ht at a grid in event of fault) you should isolate both sides of the input with an appropriate rated cap.. just in case. Learned the hard way when a shorted input valve on a guitar amp decided to throw +250v DC at me down a guitar lead one night.. I was running with the ground off due to some bad buzz problems from the old mill (rehearsal rooms) wiring and it seems the live/neutral was reversed there. I went and added isolating caps to every input after that, both ground and hot so to speak. Won't stop the chassis going live, but will protect you if you happen to be holding something connected to it.. a 0.001 at 400v is enough and allows enough 50Hz through to give you a warning "tingle" in the event of something major going wrong.

FYI .. observation which may be useful.. guitar player complaining about tingles from microphone?.. check the grounding of their amp .. double would guitar amps generally tend to "float" at around 75v AC if some bright spark has decided to use a 2 core lawnmower flex.
