Can't say I've had a jammed open throttle but I did have a snapped throttle cable on a Skoda 110L. It's a long cable and fortunately the Hillman Imp cable is long enough.
As a get you home bodge the ckoke cable will reach the throttle connection on the carb, snag is you have to use your hand on the choke lever rather than the pedal, the issue is getting your brain to stop pressing the throttle.

The other throttle bodge is a length of baler twine run under the edge of the bonnet and in through the window.

The only time I have come across this in recent years was with a friend at work who had a renault diesel. He had the engine rev itself to an early grave one day. I know little about the fault but is apparently not unsual on these engines. No real issue with safety as he was able to stop but probably terrifying.

Sounds like diesel runaway, oil splashes (too much oil put in?) getting drawn in to the air intake, and the engine running on that rather than fuel, so the fuel system completely loses control.

I think that Renault diesel runaway was down to worn bearings on the turbo causing oil to be drawn into the inlet manifold. Turning the ignition off would make no difference. The only way to stop it was to stall the engine. The daughter of a work colleague had this happen to her car.

Hi.
The other things that causes diesel runaway are: DPF choked and the system keeps trying a regeneration, that works by increasing the fuel to air ratio to increase heat in the DPF to burn off the carbon build up, the snag though is that the excess fuel passes the piston rings diluting the oil especially with a choked DPF, this happened to my sons Mitsubishi Outlander. Short runs can also cause the issue, the moral of that is "Never" buy a diesel if you do short runs because the DPF will choke and a cold running diesel will always pass fuel to the sump via the rings even without a DPF.

Yes indeed. Some BMW models suffer with the same issue with the Turbo.

"Running away" due to lube oil being drawn past worn piston rings in worn bores or through damaged scavenge blower seals was not uncommon on two stroke diesels. GM actually fitted an emergency shut off flap in the air intake on Detroit diesel engines as standard! Blocking the air intake is the only way to stop an engine suffering this type of runaway.

Not quite true - you can also stop them with a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher aimed down the air intake. Or, simply stall them.

CO2 fire extinguisher is practical, particularly when an air filter is in place. I always remove the airfilter when starting an engine which has been standing for a long time and have a flat board or plate handy to slap over the air intake. Sometimes the fuel rack can be stuck open. Stalling is not an option when the engine is driving a generator or the propulsion unit in a boat!
