A local shop stocks Varta batteries and I've bought a couple of 1289 style ones, (old fashioned flat pocket torch type), they'll get me going when I've located a short, across the +& - (fortunately not the output transistors). Those batteries may seem an odd choice but I've also found one of the ever ready torches they fit....
