As things are looking a little more optimistic for this set now, i will eventually re-cap the whole thing. I don't want to just go at it like a bull in a china shop and spoil the originality. The set condition is quite good with no evidence of it ever been played with, all components looking original. As i said in a previous post i cleaned up the lopt etc, and so far have bodged in a few caps (taken from old color crt tv's) here and there to get this far. I was wondering what the wax on those old caps melting point was ? and could i dip new yellow polyprop caps in melted wax to get a similar look ? or would it just melt when the set warmed up making a bloody mess.

Well done for getting this far. Please make sure you have an RCD somewhere in the mains feed to the set. Either in the consumer unit or on your bench.

The answer to your question is in front of you. The set is nearly 70 years old. How much of the wax has melted in all that time?

Rather than a similar look, wouldn't the same look be better? Personally, I wouldn't bother. After all, back in the day, repairers would use whatever components they had in stock, which would rarely match the originals. Also, apart from you, who is ever going to see these replacements?

However, I know that some restorers take pride in maintaining the original look - their choice entirely. I certainly won't criticise them for it. Taking advantage of the fact that modern capacitors are much smaller than the originals, it is possible to carefully open one end of the cardboard tube, remove the old contents, insert a smaller modern capacitor, then close the tube up again.

I'm sure that someone who is an expert at such things will be able to offer practical advice.

I prefer restuff as many of the original TCC 343 capacitors as possible. Hi-Viz capacitors don't look good in old sets.

Terry, although I'm not into vintage TV's, I'm glad I'm not the only one who metaphorically has his 'service engineer's hat on, when repairing old radios, etc. i.e., I use the nearest available modern components, usually the yellow axial capacitors to replace old wax types, and 2 watt metal film or similar resistors to replace old carbon composition ones, in that case because they are a similar size. I seldom, if ever re-stuff old capacitors, although im a pre-war Philips radio I did fit modern axial capacitors inside the tubes the originals, because it was easy to do, and made fitting the replacements easy, too!

Re-capped my TV 22 last night (main chassis only). Went for "smoke test" , As the EHT started to come up there was a small arcing sound and EHT now gone . Checked over and over all i had done could not find anything obvious, very tired and sad, as i thought my lopt had died. This morning went to check every thing again a bit more refreshed and have discovered the Horizontal Form transformer is O/C on the  middle pin. Hopefully these are not made from unobtanium like the lopt seems to be. Has any one here got a spare ? and what could of caused this, there is nothing visually wrong looking at it.

Its damp and age in old wound parts. It should be easy enough to get it rewound.

I may be a really good idea to dry out the LOPT before that goes the same way, either by passing a small current through it for several days or keeping it warm for weeks.
Lots of advice on here and Vrat forum on how to save it.

Looks simple enough to rewind, if you got the right stuff, could do it by hand i suppose, can you recommend anyone who might be able to do it for me? As for my LOPT, i'm a little worried as i had already cleaned all the pitch off by heating it in the oven (see earlier post) and afterwards have sprayed it with anti-corona spray, so if there is moisture in there it is now trapped ! i'd better start looking for more TV22's they are getting quite hard to find now.

Ed Dinning rewinds all sorts of transformers. So does Mike Barker. I don't think Ed can do EHT overwinds on LOPTs, the tall thin kind. Mike may be able to do them.

Received opinion is that the best way to dry out a transformer is to pass DC through it. This dries it from the inside. If you gave it a good baking that probably dried it but from the outside. With luck you baked out all the moisture.

TV22 prices are stiil way down on their peak. Can't remember when they peaked but possibly early 2000s, with £100+ for just about anything, maybe £300 for a nice example back then.
