When kit is in active service, be it locos, radios or anything else, there can be obvious benefits to doing upgrades. For example when a TV has been fitted with a Band III converter should you remove it as part of a restoration or treat it as part of the set's history? For repairs, no TV/radio service guy would have dreamed of restuffing anything. He would have used whatever was to hand or ordered something suitable from Radiospares.

Now we have the luxury of looking at things from the POV of historical preservation. We can choose different approaches depending on how we feel.

Peter, when you say "For me the smoke deflectors are as bad as seeing a host of yellow capacitors in an old radio or television", I think you are missing the point I was trying to make. The smoke deflectors were fitted during the latter years of the locomotive's operational life, so are an authentic feature of the locomotive as it is restored as it was at that point in its life.
They can't be compared to fitting a host of yellow capacitors to an old radio in it's 'preservation lifetime', long after its service life. They would be comparable to fitting smoke deflectors in preservation to a locomotive which never had them when in service, which I agree would not be acceptable.

I think we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one!

Britannia Class 'Byron', built at Crewe in November 1952 and scrapped just 15 years later - still nearly new! Two of the class are preserved, 'Britannia' and 'Oliver Cromwell'.

I remember those, did Crewe Works when I was at school,....don't tread on a wheel that's just had a tyre put on!! (not me, my mate)

Used to bike to Hartford to watch the trains, when I was a nipper.

Some locomotive classes were rebuilt in pre-BR days so who is to say that, if he hadn't died in 1941 and the second world war hadn't intervened, that Gresley himself might not have brought his own design up to date? After all, it was rebuilt as an A3 shortly after the end of the war.

He'd already designed 1,500VDC locomotives so wasn't firmly entrenched in the past, so who's to say?

What would be wrong would be to repaint FS in LNER livery with its 4472 number and those smoke deflectors although, if they were removed, I think most folk would excuse the double chimney.

I think the train crew might object to the double chimney without the deflectors. The exhaust pressure from the single chimney allows the smoke to rise such that clear forward vision is not obstructed but the same does not apply to the lower pressure double chimney.
