When kit is in active service, be it locos, radios or anything else, there can be obvious benefits to doing upgrades. For example when a TV has been fitted with a Band III converter should you remove it as part of a restoration or treat it as part of the set's history? For repairs, no TV/radio service guy would have dreamed of restuffing anything. He would have used whatever was to hand or ordered something suitable from Radiospares.
Now we have the luxury of looking at things from the POV of historical preservation. We can choose different approaches depending on how we feel.
