What about the colour rendering of LED are they more or less like the light from Fluorescent tubes.
The quality of photos which I took using the old lamp as the main light source were very good, better colour accuracy than even outdoor natural light when using my little Canon camera.

Thanks for your input, I dont think any of the suggestions so far fit the original lamp, but I have sent of emails to a number of suppliers with the photo for information.

Like fluorescents, LEDs are a mixed bunch when it comes to colour rendering. The worst fluorescents are horrible, as are the worst LEDs. The best of both are pretty good though ultiamtely not quite as good as daylight. Then there's the personal preference of warmer or cooler white. I normally use warm white LEDs. That's 2700K to 3000K. This corresponds to the sort of colour you get from conventional filament lamps. 2700K for old fashioned tungsten, 3000K for halogen. Others may prefer a cooler white. 4000K is common.

As I've said before in this thread, the quickest and chepaest way to get your bench lamp back working is some LED tape. You can get this is warm or cool white. I use it for under cupboard lights in the kitchen where it works well. Mostly runs on 12V, some sets are provided witha driver, otherwise just use any 12VDC PSU that's to hand.

Like Jeffrey I use the LED strips. I've a 12 volt solar power system that keep 240AH of leisure battery power charged so this runs my shed lighting and also indoors for background lighting. Useful for power outages too.
On a personal note I've found the 4000K a larger light output than the warm ones, I don't think it's subjective as two different light meters both read higher with the 4000K LED's.

Just an observation, ideally if using a LED strip its best to have the strip affixed to the top of the inside of your lamp so maximum light will be available on your work area, the strips won't bend that way, so you would need to stick them to the side in the lamp, it may have a detrimental effect on light output.

AFAIK all 4000K LEDs have a higher light output than 3000K ones. I think it's due to the phosphors for 4000K being that bit more efficient.

Yu can also get LED strip with different numbers of LEDs per metre. More LEDs = brighter. The ones I've used in my kitchen are the lower output type, more than adequate for that job. I'd be tempted to use the higher output types for a bench lamp.

I'm sure I've seen a local electrical wholesaler offering LEDs strip by the metre. Just like you used to buy flex at Woolworths many years ago. A metre of high brightness LED strip should servve you very well. Even if you cant' get it arranged optimally there may well be anough light that it doesn't matter.
