Mike, there are two further schematics of practical designs in the application notes which you may find helpful. As to the -22 differences, these are minor and probably relate to production spread. They are detailed on page 5 of the data sheet but mainly influence the value of one external resistor.

Just as an update, I did finally manage to get both of the CRC4000 alarm clock/calculator radios working on both AM and FM.
The coils with the 2 dots on the adjuster are the FM ones. I even managed to get all the segments of the LCDs working.
But one of the sets needs some very thin dial cord to complete it.

I have a card here of KeilKraft No2 Terylene cord here that I believe was for controlling some sort of flying model aircraft. It is around 0.4mm diameter, does not stretch and is unbreakable by hand.

Alistair's dial cord did the job, it was very fiddly, my fingers seemed too big.
But the radio tuning is now working as well as the LCD display with all functions.
