OK think i have answered my own question; it is OBD2 compliant....or should be. The peugeot-citroen factor brings into the mix a certain level of unpredictability, and fault codes can on occasion be ambiguous, incorrect or spurious. In addition faults can occur that do not trigger the codes that they should. Thus far i have managed to dispel any faults encountered with bell, book and candle, but there may come a dark day when i have to emerge into the 21st Century and get a diagnostic tool for the job! It's a shame really. Like many modern machines it has some bad ideas, and some good ideas badly executed.

I believe that just about everything that was sold in the UK from around 1998 had to be OBD2 compliant,  I may be a year or two out but it was around that time. Certainly the 75 was and it was launched in 1998,  a 2001  Primera & 2001 Doblo which I both owned were as well.

If you get generic codes you are using a program like Torq try looking online for a PSA specific program, some will still read codes but are limited until you pay a license, I did a lot of research as at one time I was hoping to do mobile vehicle diagnostics, a heart bypass got in the way. I did have a PSA program on a notebook but it never got tested and the notebook expired some months ago and is now binned.

Thanks Trevor, that confirms the info i found.

One of the things which does chafe with control systems is the illogical algorithms and protocols which seem to preside pretty much across the manufacturers-

The sounder which goes PING if you activate the handbrake whilst still crawling is the same sounder that goes TICK when i am indicating...and the PING overrides the TICK, such that one is unaware whether one is still indicating right for several seconds- unsafe given the propensity for self cancellation with indicators. I have de-activated the handbrake PING ages ago by disconnecting the switch.

If you or i were designing the ABS/ESP algorithms a fault in the rear ABS would shut it down on the rear (complete with ALL the ESP differential braking functions) but would leave the ABS on the front axle still in operation. This, i think, would add extra parts and cost to the moving systems of the ABS module- which might explain why they don't do it!

It appears my ABS system is now operating. I freely admit i made the cardinal mistake of not reversing polarity when faced with confusing resistance readings.

Having resolved this the dud sensor (70 ohms with probes either way round) was identified and swapped for a good one (700 ohms -but only with probes one way round)

The warning light extinguished straight away. Very un-peugeot like. I did purchase a basic OBD reader but it does not 'see' ABS faults. I can live with that as it was cheap- just like the new sensor was!
