Choosing a printer

Drawing this (and a re-drawn circuit)and reading it in A3 colour made a difficult task a lot easier.

Jeepers Gary - looking at that drawing, I feel even more inadequate now, both in terms of the complexity of the set, and the neat drawing of the circuit!

That meticulous attention to detail is more like forensic science than radio restoration.

I've had several Epson inkjet printers and all have failed, usually just after buying a complete set of cartridges for them. One was networked through our NAS drive and when the printer died I bought a cheap HP printer to replace it but although it worked perfectly when connected to the PC it would not work on either the NAS printer port or with a HP network to USB converter. After a long correspondence with HP (lack of) support I gave the printer to my son for his uni work and bought a Brother network ready Mono laser printer which just worked after the drivers were installed on all the PCs on the network. I also had a Canon inkjet printer for colour prints. Once my daughter finished uni and started work as a primary school teacher she was always wanting colour prints but using the Canon was a bit of a faff as it wasn't networked and always needed cleaning before printing so I bought a network ready Brother colour laser printer, which just like its monochrome brother just works. There appear to be three types of toner cartridge available for this printer, the partly filled ones it come with, the two thirds full ones and the fully filled ones which, even at discounted prices from our local PC supplies shop cost more than the original printer.

The beauty of laser printers is that the just work even after being idle for weeks, something which doesn't happen with my daughter wanting prints for work. I must raise her rent to cover the cost of the toner!

I still have the Canon inkjet which gets used occasionally as it can print on CDs something a laser cannot do!

I rarely use my HP6110 all in one for printng. Inevitably at least one of the print heads is blocked. As Keith said, that's the beauty of lasers.

Well, I'm sure you could master the drwg package if you set yourself to it.  Just a case of reading and using a marvellous forum for almost instant help.

Here's a pic of the chassis before I stripped it:  I didn't want to but most of the rubber covered wire was shot and it had O/C sections in the bandpass coil.  Opening that wasn't easy but Mike B did a great job of re-winding.  Really doing such diagrams is the only way if you are going to have a chance of a Philips chassis (lots of complication) working when back together which it did first time.

Redrawing the Philips circuit diagram was essential as well, apart from not being in too good a condition they are terrible to understand particularly around the marvellously made switches.  Understanding that and constantly checking back and forth to the drawn layout diagram helped to get both correct.

Well I wanted to print onto a few DVDs today so fired up the Canon printer. Fault light flashed 5 times indicating a print head problem. Cleaned it several times but the fault persisted so it looks as if the print head has decided to call it a day. Replacement print heads are available but at upto 4 times what I paid for the printer, if they are available, it's the end of the line for the inkjet. Fortunately I only have 3 new cartridges this time not a full set. Anyone want a poorly Canon iP4500 printer?
