Is that the screened grid H.F. version of the original 1927 Cossor Melody Maker?
I know a SG version was in evidence from the early part of 1928, before Cossor released the 'New Cossor Melody Maker' (the one in the metal chassis) in Sep 1928. It was Peto-Scott who designed and supplied the parts to convert the original Cossor to the screened grid H.F. version and not Cossor and hence there was never a layout blueprint. That might explain the odd arrangement of the components.

I don't know Nick. It was part of what looked like a home-made Gram. It came as a scrapper from Tedzed. Joe converted the Case into a Bedside Cabinet I think and I kept the Radio. It was all in pretty rough condition as you can see, with no Deck.

Well good luck getting it working again if you choose to try Alan. I wouldn't be at all surprised if all the components are good, well with the exception of the valves that is. It's another reason I am attracted to the 1925-1935 era. I can restore/build sets using actual period components. Some components can be a bit hard to get hold of (grid leaks are a case in point) but it's normally worth the effort as they usually work. Most components can be repaired too if need be.

If you do decide to restore it, it would be an interesting exercise to see how it performs with the current layout versus rearranging the components in accordance with the article in the original post.

Looks like it has bandspead capacitors? I might be wrong but it looks scratch built to me.

Perhaps someone on this forum can answer that question, sadly I can't. It does make me think it (and yours) was constructed to a published circuit though. It would be interesting to track its provenance down, especially if it works reasonably well.

In an idle moment while I'm rained off from other vital activities I've put the two pictures together.

   

They are indeed remarkably similar.
So, a few quick comments:-
The white blob on the right of mine is a 'Portable Aerial'.

   

It's quite heavy and in a Metal Case under the Label. It measures 14.35 uF on my Gadget. I suspect it's full of Snake Oil.
It connected in Series with a small Variable C at top Right which I suspect is an Aerial Trimmer, and then to the Coil.
The two Main Tuning Capacitors are pretty obvious.
There are two Switches - Long/Medium? - below them.
The Variable C at the far Left is the Reaction I guess.
The Detector Section has a Trimmer/Bandspread Capacitor just to the left of the Screen.

It shouldn't be too difficult to work out the Circuit when time permits.
