Further to the above, I also found that, although the sound quality of the NG5151 is OK at mid to high volume levels, there was distortion at low volume settings. The cause turned out to be that the speaker cone was partially detached from the metal rim, probably due to the fact that the mains dropper resistor and o/p valve, both of which are horizontally mounted, are underneathe the speaker, the valve only being about 0.5" below th cone, and, especially after 55 years, rising warmth from the valve & dropper had dried out the adhesive used.
Could this only have happened in a Philips Player?? (Due to the way the amp. & dropper are installed!)

I suspect Heat in the wrong place affects all sorts of Gear. They never expected it to last this long.
Old-fashioned Evo-stick is usually good for reattaching. Use it wet.

I did re-glue the cone to the speaker rim, Alan, but, in the end I decided to fit replacement speaker, having one of the correct diameter from a scrap DAC90 radio. Although this has a thicker rim than the Philips original, I was able, with some difficulty, to clamp it in place, and the sound quality is now good at all volume levels. AS usual, though, Philips had to be different. Not only is the original speaker a thin rimmed type, but it's rated at 5 ohms rather than the more usual 3. I cannot see that causing any problems in practice, though.

Splendid result, and I agree that the difference in Impedance is unlikely to make much difference.

You've scrapped a DAC90! Sacrilege some would say

Perhaps scrapping a DAC90 is sacrilege, Alan, but the case of this one was broken in several places, and I'd been searching without success for a replacement.  If I should be able to get a cabinet and another speaker I can still rebuild the '90 one day.

Many 10s of 1000s of DAC90-series sets were produced (some say up to 250,000)... they're far from rare... better be a parts donor than just a pile of bits.
