AR88 resistor marking confusion explained

I am used to seeing £20k or $20K or even $HK20K never with the K/k before the number.

In the FX markets world (where I spend my working days), we always use the ISO 4217 currency code, quantity, multiplier (K,M or B). e.g.

• GBP10K - 10 thousand British Pounds
  
• CHF300M - 300 million Swiss Francs
  
• JPY15B - 15 billion Yen
  

The commercial finance world doesn't use symbols like "£" as these render differently in differing code sets and are thus not reliable. Sticking to the iso-latin-1 (ISO 8859-1) character set means that there is no ambiguity and the value renders correctly in all common fonts, including those that use UNICODE and its multi-byte character set derivatives.

For David's benefit, in the financial world, a "billion" is always 10^9, i.e. short scale.

The RCA AR77 Manual doesn't use that "M" notation, not that I can see.
