The coffin lining isn't bad enough to need replacing. It's just a bit fluffy at the rear edge where the back has perhaps rubbed. The most I'll do to it is paint the edge with shellac to stabilise it, assuming it doesn't drop to bits when I start working on it.

As for the hazards, I'm with Yorkie. I think anybody my age or older will already have been exposed. My Mum's ironing-board had an asbestos pad which gradually crumbled away, and this was just at a child's nose height. We had an asbestos cement garage that I watched being knocked down when I was seven and there were still, in fact there still are, pieces of it from the air-raid shelter kicking about in the garden.

Well I've stuck some juice up it and it works.

So far I've only re-sleeved the bad wiring on top of the chassis.

I think what's left of the white should come off without damaging the station names.

I would be rethinking that asbestos dropper insulation, it looks a tad crumbly and not good for the health.

True, but digging it out to change strikes me as being more dangerous than leaving well alone.

You can use masterboard if it will fit, available in 6 mm thickness, cuts, drills and files dead easy, I have used it as a heat/flame shield when using a blowtorch in tight plumbing operations, also used it as a backing board behind our wood stoves, it comes in big sheets at builders merchants but some diy stores do smaller sheets, off cuts usually available on construction sites, permission permitting.

It is indeed, Mark.

I've just shellaced the edges of the original and, much to my surprise, wasn't getting fibres sticking to my brush. I'll see how solid it seems when that's hardened.

I used the name Masterboard as a generic name, although Masterboard is a trade mark I think other similar products are generally available, a large sheet (1.2m x 2.4m) is not dead cheap but if you get a sheet for impending jobs around the house then keep the off cuts as they tend to come in handy.

I've now finished sorting the wiring out, including making the switch break the Live. I've removed the mains filter, I have got suitable X-class caps in stock but will see what it's like without.

The most interesting bits on this set are going to be the back and dial.
