I've finished re-capping this which has made no noticeable difference to the sensitivity or lack of LW. Resistors next.

I can't find any shorts in the tuning gang; the only thing that seems amiss with that is that the rubber grommets are shot so it's a bit loose.

Bypassing the resistor on the Gram socket brings the volume from that up nicely.

I'm certainly enjoying this one. I've never felt as out of my depth, frustrated and generally inadequate with any other valve radio, including the infamous 'Little Maestro' which was the first I tried to do, as I did with that PCR. Transistors are a different matter.

Hi Joe, I had one of these for a while and I also thought it a bit quiet, It turned out that it needed quite a long wire
as the aerial, improved matters no end.

Just a thought; that 560k resistor might have been to match a particular pick-up the former owner had on his record player. The Bush manual shows a set-up using a 330K resistor in parallel with a 3nF capacitor for use with the GP19 pick-up.

Yes, I'm suspecting something like that as without it it's a bit shrill. It'll be a case of experimenting to find the best value or maybe a cap across it.

I'm not doing any more today as I may as well do it in decent light. I've found quite a few resistors which have gone high which need attention first.

From what you say, the RF side is not doing it's full job. If the IF's are OK and the wavechange switch clean, then C8. C5 and C1.

This is because capacitors block low frequencies, so LW is dead, MW is nearly dead and SW is OK. Try another ECH42 and clean the socket.

This set does not have any antenna coils so it will need a good aerial.

IF is 465 Khz by the way.

I know it doesn't have any sort of frame aerial but I can usually get Absolute Radio without, including on a Bush AC34 which is very similar. In fact that station is VERY strong here, so much so that it drowns everything else on crystal sets and I've known it break through on amplifiers.

In that case, go for the oscillator side of the ECH42.

I'm using the maker's service manual by the way. C11 on the makers sheet, C10 on the trader sheet.

I've now change R1, R6, R11 and R24 (Trader numbers) and cleaned the valve pins. This has brought about a big improvement and there's even signs of life on Long Wave.

There are a few more resistors around the AF stage to do.

I can't say as I'm not re-testing after every change. The output transformer is in the bottom part of the cabinet so I have to keep putting the chassis back to test it. I suspect it was R1 and/or R7.
