They are essentially a rather powerful computer, like so much else these days... That current demand will vary according to what it's doing, as I mentioned earlier, but it's important the PSU can supply it without sagging, otherwise the router might crash or reboot.
IIRC, mine took a large "gulp" at the part of boot-up when the wireless network was powered up, which caused the PSU volts to fall, which caused the router to reboot and try again ad infinitum. It was a pretty light display!
Mine is the 12V version (so less current needed), and my replacement also came from CPC: http://cpc.farnell.com/ideal-power/5207-...dp/PW02409
The router is a DSL-2640B, if this helps...
Needless to say, the PSUs can be repaired, providing you're suitably careful about it. It's just a case of changing the electrolytics. Is it worth it when the replacements are so cheap? Perhaps not in any financial sense, but I doubt that would stop us "proper" engineers!
