Hi,
I've been busy over the last few days spending time working on this bandsaw and progress is being made.
The main components have now received two undercoats and two top coats of Paragon machinery enamel applied by brush. The top coats are cream white RAL 9001 which is a striking colour for machinery. I've just come out of the garage after applying the second top coat so I'll now let the paint dry for a day; it drives me mad in owning expensive compressors and spray guns but being prevented from using them because of the weather. Had I been able to spray I could have used cellulose and completed the painting easily in a couple of days but machinery enamel takes at least twelve hours for each coat to dry slowing the job down a great deal.
The first undercoat took four hours to apply because the job is so fiddly and I'm not surprised the person who previously applied the thick hammered enamel ended up with masses of curtains and runs; I've improved a great deal on the paint finish which is now acceptable but once the paint dries I'll consider applying a third top coat because the castings are so poor; I didn't want to start grinding the castings just to obtain a showroom finish because after all this is going to be a well used machine but I do want it to look much improved over what it was like when I bought it. It's taken three hours to apply the top coat this morning but for a change I can work in comfort with good lighting; pity I can't spray though?
Small components still require de-greasing and painting but for these I can undercoat using a spray can then brush apply the top coats to save some time.
This restoration has dragged on more than expected but then I've been busy on other things such as buying and installing the Lorch lathe. This bandsaw sure looks a lot different to what it did?
